Alyvin Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 We are travelling down to Bourton on the Water from Merseyside. Just after some advice from anybody familiar with the roads in the Cotswolds. Google maps is suggesting M6, M6 toll, M42, M40, A429. Alternative M6, M5 J5, A44, A424. We are just after the easiest route, has anybody any experience of these routes?
BrianI Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Probably the easiest way is M6, M5J11A, A417, A436. This gives you the shortest route on normal roads. Note Bourton site (formerly Notgrove) is about 5 miles west of Bourton on the A436. Very nice peaceful site on the site of Notgrove railway station, which was the highest station on the GWR network. Brian
Xl125 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 If you are in the caravan club and you use the toll you only pay for the car if you have your card with you. Follow the lorry you need a barrier that is manned for the discount.

Brian Thanks for that. I hadn't even considered travelling down past Cheltenham and the across. They do look like easy roads. We are going to The Cotswold Carp Farm as it is within easy walking distance of Bourton on the Water. We did use the discount 2 years ago. It's good to know its still available.
moorgate Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 " Very nice peaceful site on the site of Notgrove railway station, which was the highest station on the GWR network." Really the highest station? I'd have thought that Princetown on Dartmoor was maybe the highest on GWR till it closed in 1956, but alas not a campsite now.

Since the Managed Motorway from 10a down has been open it's not really worth using the M6T, I'm up the twice a week and only used the M6T once since the upgrade.
KontikiKid Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I agree with the above - the toll road is not worth bothering with. I'd use the second of the OP's routes. PR1 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 We regularly go the opposite way to you from the Southern Cotswolds to Burrs Park CC and beyond and the toll road adds miles and miles to the journey so do not use that route! 2019 Bailey Platinum (640) Phoenix from Chipping Sodbury caravans, towed by our 2017 my Discovery Sport!
kenles Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The carp farm is a great Site and 10 minutes walk in to the village
kenles Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I would come off the M5J11 and go towards Cheltenham on to A40 as it is not to many hills
TonyJover Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I do Nuneaton (M6 Jct3) to Stafford and back quite regularly (solo, no van) and for the times I travel, the M6 Toll saves half an hour or more each way. Tony
Durbanite Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 We go down to that area quite often. When travelling there we use M5 J6, then A44 which is a fairly good road and you miss Evesham, then onto Moreton in Marsh and then Bourton. I would never consider the Cheltenham route. Whatever route you choose, enjoy the holidays.
Alyvin Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Thanks for all the advice. We have just returned from 3 great weeks at the Cotswold Carp Farm, we had booked for 2 weeks but stayed for 3. It's a great site, adults only, 15 min walk down a bridle path to Bourton on the Water. Easy access to lots of lovely walks. We actually went M6, M5 J11a. It was a great route except for roadworks on the M6 just after the exit to the toll road, it took us an hour to travel 2 junctions! So the advice is beware of the roadworks at J11 on the M6 southbound. Same route home northbound was completely clear.
