Anybody Tow With A Ford Focus Estate ?

Hi all,

 

I currently tow my Orion 400-2 with a Ford Focus 1. 6ltr petrol Estate, and was wondering if anybody out there had the same sort of unit and what there thoughts maybe about it.

 

Im new to towing started last year, i already had the car and sort out a van that would suit, its a small van and quite light and my wife and i love it.

 

i just feel a bit underpowered and im currently looking at changing the Estate for a Focus hatchback maybe a 1. 8tdci .

 

Any advice or thoughts would be great.

If the Petrol is stable enough with your van the 1. 8TDCI will certainly give you a lot more pulling power on the hills if that is all you are after.

We used to pull 1200kg with a 2. 0. l petrol Focus and although it was OK we did need to stir the gearbox quite a bit to keep it moving.

 

We upgraded the car to 2. 0Tdci C-Max (which is really just a Focus underneath) and the difference was amazing, we subsequently got a bigger van (1420kg) and pulled it all over Scotland. We've still got the C-Max and my wife reckons it's the best car she's ever had.

 

I should think that the 1. 8Tdci Estate would be an excellent towcar but a 2. 0Tdci would be better if you can stretch to it and it should give yo a bit more scope to upgrade the van in the future.

i used to tow the van we have now, 1050kg fully laden with a 1. 6 focus estate. on the flat it was fine but really struggled up hills, in the end i changed car to a passat 1. 9tdi which now pulls the van really well and is less stressful to drive than the focus.

Thank you all for your replies. the comments and advice given has settled my mind into changing to a tdci .

We are off to Chatsworth this weekend, having not towed since October last year its our first outing in 2013 nice site to visit we have been told never been so lucking forward to it.
