Losing your passport while away – what to do
Losing your passport while you’re away can be a costly affair as well as a stressful one. As well as reporting your lost passport to the local police office in the country you are in – especially important to ensure you get crime reference details to put on your LS01 (Lost or Stolen Passport Notification) Form – you’ll need to contact the UK embassy, consulate or high commission in that country to let them know too. They will give you a LS01 Form to fill in and sign, as well as recording and forwarding the details of your loss to the IPS (the Identity and Passport Service) who will cancel your old passport.
You’ll then be issued with a replacement passport to travel back to the UK.
There is a fee for this service, and added to the costs of travelling to the embassy or consulate, it makes losing your passport while away expensive. Losing your other valuable documents while away
As well as your money, traveller’s cheques and credit or debit cards, losing your travel documents, such as your ferry crossing booking and your driving licence, can cause unnecessary strain while you’re away on holiday. For online bookings you may simply have to reprint your documents out again, while if issued from your travel agent, there may be a handling charge for issuing replacement tickets. You may also have to pay for a replacement ticket and then reclaim it once you’re home.
If your money is lost or stolen you should report this to the local police straight away, who can issue you with a crime reference for your travel insurance company. For your bank cards, you’ll need to contact your bank on their 24-hour emergency number.
Travellers cheques are more straightforward; you’ll simply need to call the emergency number on your cheque receipts and report them missing. The issuing company will give you details of what to do next, and you should receive replacements within 24 hours.

When in your touring caravan you can minimise the risk of losing your passport and valuable documents. There are a number of things to bear in mind.
- A small floor-anchored safe for your most valuable items, including your documents, may be a consideration, but be aware of its impact on your load.
- Always remember to close and lock your windows, skylights and doors before you leave, and never leave your valuables in view. It is also worth taking portable items such as keys, passports, cash, credit cards and bank books with you when you go out.
- When you take your valuable documents out and about with you, ensure they are kept close to your person and don’t leave your bag unattended at all – money belts can often be a good idea.
- Take photocopies of all of your valuable documents to ensure you have a record of important numbers kept safe.
- To ensure your caravan is not stolen including your contents, consider investing in wheel locks and a reliable alarm system, and always secure to a post if available.
