milkymarsh
I know the reviews have been good for the Touareg as a towcar, but wanted to know if it was really that good. Also, LogicLee, is the gearbox on the car any good (any issues with it?). Conscious that its a 7 speed DSG Reason for asking is that I am sorely tempted by one. It has a factory fitted towbar, so that covers off the fan upgrade etc. The towbar operation is fantastic & the dealer sent me this little video of its operation that you may like: http://video. citnow. com/vsgcLZ6CWd8 Full 13 pin electrics included & looks like there is enough space for the alko hitch, but would appreciate people's opinion before I potentially take a leap into the unknown Milky NB: Yes, I believe I'm having my midlife crisis now! logiclee
If your are looking at a later 3. 0V6 diesel you won't get a DSG at all you'll get an 8 Speed Conventional Auto. It's not the ZF8HP though it's a box from Japanese manufacturer Aisin. Aisin have a very good reputation for smooth reliable automatics but are usually not as crisp or as fast responding as the newer ZF boxes. Saying that you are looking at a very large SUV not a small turbo sports saloon so the box may suit the vehicle quite well. Marks
Aisin make the boxes for Volvo too, my V70 has one Edited September 12, 2014 by Marks Quote Land Rover Discovery and Conquerer
logiclee
Aisin make the boxes for Volvo too, my V70 has one Aisin have a very wide market for transverse engined fwd and awd applications. Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, Vauxhall, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Saab, Jeep etc, etc. But ZF have pretty much had the premium longitudinal engined rwd and awd market to themselves. BMW, Audi, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Range Rover, Maserati etc etc. There have been some notable exceptions though. Porsche, Audi and VW decided on the Aisin Longitudinal box for the Cayenne, Q7 and Touareg. And BMW have chosen Aisin boxes for their new FWD models and for the new Mini. Of course this info is for conventional auto's VAG and Ford are now big into Dual Clutch automatics. Not man car manufacturers actually make their own conventional automatics, probably Merc are the biggest exception. Lee. It has the factory fitted towbar so no debates over cooling upgrades or not! Happy Just in time for October half term jaunt. .. Hi milkymarsh. We got one of these, same model in fact in March and it is a great car. Tows our 1900kg TA with ease. Does it have the air suspension? Nice if it does, not the end of the world if it doesnt. Do check the plug is wired for the fridge/battery charging though as even from new they do not come wired for these. Open the flap of the socket and see how many pins are present. Mine had to be sorted by local towbar specialist as even VW's instructions to dealers re upgrading the wiring for fridge/charging was incorrect and the supplying dealer had cut off the earth supply for the fridge! Its a great car, enjoy it. Volvovanner (i shd change this to V Wvanner perhaps???) Quote Powrtouch AWD Movers. E & P Compact Levelling System. nme2no1
I think Kat Girl with her 5 litre V10 would probably think otherwise! The guys on mytreg. com definately advise against the V10 saying it will bleed your wallet dry in no time at all, many jobs that are fairly minor need the engine out on the, 10 (30+ hrs labour) whereas of the straight 5 and V6 the same jobs can be done with the engine in situ. This was the main reason for me going for a V6, I could have got a newer V10 with fewer miles for the same money.

If you have any touareg related queries the guys on mytreg. com are brilliant. we have a 55 plate Touareg and we bought a 3 year warranty the first time ever it was a lot cheaper than the cost of potential repairs I think it was about £500 and covers all the expensive scary parts that are a concern. Hubby is very engine savvy but this is way above his knowledge we trawled the country from Scotland to Cornwall trying to get a good one and spent months looking but decided on the warranty just in case hope we never need it. Sorry I am not sure who the warranty company is. Quote Live life to the full you are a long time dead

Sorry I am not sure who the warranty company is. Sorry kat girl, I hope I'm wrong but I think you'll find that warranty is next to useless. It is likely to be limited maximum claim and on the V10 even minor jobs can be an engine out job which will run away with labour charges way above what a warranty company will honour. I really hope I'm wrong, I suspect I won't be, if the gearbox, major engine issue or injection problem occurs, budget starts at £5k. I'd be very interested in the warranty company that covers so much for so little if I'm wrong.
steve frs
Warranty direct will cover most items upto the purchase price of the car however there are limitations on both mileage and age. Another Treg owner!
