I think its the same engine and transmission as in my Saab 93 convertible. Plenty of power and pretty good economy (Saab is heavy!). Saab is based on Vectra floor pan.

Its been pretty reliable too. EGR valves can go, as can alternators. They also had some problems with road springs braking.

We don't tow with ours as we have a Sorento too.

Sister in law and my neighbour had the same engine in Zafira's

Both had DPF failures at around 50k miles. Maybe something to consider if you are mainly a low mileage urban driver. Sister in Law is now selling hers as the DPF light is coming on again.

Ask the question on Vectra-C. com and get a very biased opinion on how good these Vectras are ;).

We've had two - a 52 plate 3. 2 V6 GSi and a 3. 0 V6 CDTi Signum Design. Ok, neither had a DPF but otherwise they were both brilliant cars IMO.

A very heavy-footed relative has one and not broken it yet - the DMF flywheel lasted 70,000 of abuse and glowplugs have had to be replaced but that's it in 100,000 miles - still being abused.

The beauty of Vectras is that every good independent workshop can deal with any issues, no expensive specialist to bump up any repair costs.

I had the 1. 9cdti 120bhp design estate. I had that car for seven years and to be honest was a brilliant car, it towed my 1450kg Avante with no problems at all. In fact the only reason I part exchanged it for my CRV was because after seven years I just fancied something different.

Mine was fitted with a DPF, but it never caused any problems at all, I had a coil spring go on the rear so I uprated them to heavy duty ones, much better then for towing and the alternator packed up. Other than that, no other problems in seven years ownership, the only other expenses were for servicing/tyres.

There are plenty around to choose from, so pick wisely, insist on full service history as Vectra's hide their mileage well and there are lots of abused one's around. If it's around the 100k miles, ask the dealer/seller to change the timing belt as they are due at that mileage.

It's not the most exciting car, but they are comfortable, good on fuel and will swallow just about anything a family can throw at it.

A very underrated car the Vectra.
