We place a foam garden kneeling mat behind the tow ball to protect the car bumper when we are unhitching the caravan stops the hitch extending into the bumper.

After reversing pull for slightly will take the tension off the ram and stop it extending forwards .

We apply the caravan handbrake and then let the car pull forward on idling revs. Works for us. :D

At home as the drive slopes towards the house, after stopping I engage the motor movers and just pull the caravan back a little. Works every time.

I have a lovely chrome effect bumper protector fitted which really sets off against the black car. Used to fit the black ones but found they rusted after a few years.

That's exactly what we do Turts, works a treat and cheap too, circa £1. 50 at Aldi

the same for us - can't have a "lovely chrome effect" protector as we've got a detachable tow bar - we've made a cut-out in the bottom of our kneeling pad - and it slips on, and stays put on the tow bar :)
