Testing A Battery

Recommended Posts

Is they any way of testing a battery to see if it has come to the end of its life before I purchase a new one. I haven't used the caravan for about a month and when i went to collect it from storage it would nt work the motor mover. I did make sure that everything was turned off not to run the battery dead.

The battery charges up over 12. volts. what would be a way of checking that it can hold a charge.

You can run to any halfords and they will do a load test for you, as I am sure many garages would do for you.

One of the main problems with the motor industry (including caravans) is that it is set up to charge batteries at constant voltage - which is not the ideal for a lead acid. If you want it to hold charge feed it at a low constant current for a long time. For example, charge a 110Ah battery at something between 500mA and 1A for a couple of weeks and it will not only come up but will hold the charge for ages. To do this of course you will need a (variable) current limited power supply (rather than a charger) which is a bit of a specialist item.

Another way to do it is to use a high voltage d. c. supply and connect a light bulb in series. The voltage drop across the bulb will be relatively constant compared against the battery voltage so again it is essentially a constant current charge.

Both of these are slightly specialist tasks but if you know and are competent in what you are doing it does work.

However, if you have a genuine leisure rather than a relabelled starter battery then doing that test will damage the battery further.

A rough and ready test.

With a fully charged battery (about 12. 8volts) run the motor mover for 5 minutes or so. Leave for 10 minutes for the battery to settle and measure the voltage, which should still be about 12. 5 volts. If it has dropped below 12 volts then the battery is weak.

Land Rover is now back towing.
