RYCKO
Just had the autobox transmission fluid changed, along with transfer box, AND front and rear diffs. What a marked difference it has made. Smoother, no gear change delays, silk smooth like melted chocolate, quieter. All round a nicer car to drive. Have you missed the service interval thinking it can wait. Towing is hard work for the oil, and getting it changed is a great way to prevent very expensive failures. Quote Power unit at front all the time, Van behind (hopefully) some of the time unless I'm reversing then it's all the other way round . .... Or is it? RADIOTWO
I thought about having my Auto box oil changed, but been told (by more than one ) dealer my box is sealed for life. So that's one job not being done ! Marks
I thought about having my Auto box oil changed, but been told (by more than one ) dealer my box is sealed for life. So that's one job not being done ! Radiotwo As far as I am, and many others, there is no such thing as sealed for life, as the saying goes, the gearbox will fail the day after you should have changed the fluid. Any dealer will always follow the company line, it would be more than their jobs worth to go against the hand that feeds them, go to a good auto gearbox specialist and seek their advice, don't talk to a dealer. As I tow with the Volvo, I get the fluid changed at every service, on my "sealed for life" box Quote Land Rover Discovery and Conquerer
colonel
I changed the oil and filters in my autobox myself. When I dropped the gearbox sump, what came out was nothing like the thin, bright red oil that was supposed to be there just an opaque, very dark brown, almost black, stinking fluid. Two new filters, one for the gearbox and one for the cooler completed the job. There was a marked improvement immediately and more improvement over the following weeks. syandi
The dealers will go by the information from the manufacturer but that is usually for normal use, towing big un-aerodynamic boxes around is not included in normal use so the oil in the gearbox will need changing more often. I have a SsangYong Rexton with a "sealed for life" Mercedes Tiptronic box and it is recommended that with towing vehicles the oil is changed every 60k miles. ...not sealed for life then. rslsys
For 2002 model year cars, Mercedes declared that the fluid no longer needed changing in their auto boxes. My local independent Merc fettler was suspicious as there had been no change in the actual gearbox fitted to the cars since 1999! Sure enough, following a spate of warranty claims, Mercedes went back to scheduling fluid changes for 2004 model year cars. They still had the same, 1999 introduced gearbox that had been fitted to the 2002 & 2003 cars. My guys changed fluids regardless and, guess what, if you take a 2002 or 2003 car to a main dealer - they will STILL tell you a fluid change is not needed on your vehicle!
