KNARF
I would add water to just cover the plates before charging, theres plenty of room for the acid to expand and I'd have took the caps off and rested them over the holes. Once the battery is charged and cooled check the electrolyte again and top up if necessary/quote] That is the recommended method,if you charge the battery with the top of the plates showing you will damage the plates knarf [ Edited January 9, 2014 by KNARF

ericmark
Yes if that low top up to the separators unlikely to be able to see the plates. H2SO4 has a greater bulk than H2O so changing between two states will cause a rise in electrolyte level. When in a confined space often used auto fillers which would fill to 1/4" above what ever it touched so if there is a level bar then 1/4" high anyway so after charging getting on to 1/2" too high. As to caps on or off it depends on the battery. Some of the Lucas batteries had a built in auto top up system and when you remove the top up plate little balls seal the vents charging with top removed would cause electrolyte in each cell to join in the top up tray clearly not what is wanted. Other batteries have a condensing route for gasses which should return water to the cells. On the other hand routing around on the floor to find the caps blown off is not good either. Batteries do go bang I have had my fair share go on me some rather spectacular. Glasses is always a must and a supply of water near by.
