Trip To Carcassonne - Any Site Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Good evening,

I'm planning the annual jaunt over to France for the first two weeks in August. Rather than the usual Jard sur Mer destination, we've decided to visit Carcassonne. We'll be travelling by Eurotunnel (Molly dog travelling with us) and will plan a couple of overnight stops on the way down.

Has anyone had experience of a similar trip, and can offer any site recommendations?

Many thanks in anticipation.

We visited Carcassonne a few years ago and stayed at Domaine d' arnateullle about 15km to the South, which was excellent There is a site closer, but reviews are mixed.

Old Carcassonne is a wonderful old city, a must see, but one day would be enough. It is very touristy and very busy. If that is your destination then staying a few miles outside the city would be far better option as it would (1) be cheaper and (2) give more scope for seeing the region. The Cathar Castles in the hills to the south are superb.

(edited because using a) then B) turns into smileys!

Like Not So Big John I would say that you only need one day to 'do' Carcassonne - It's lovely, but in peak season it's very very busy and the first two weeks in August is absolute peak season. However, it's in the centre of a lovely area - with the Cathar castles and the Pyrenees to the south, the Canal du Midi both to the west and east, the Montagne Noir to the north, and the beaches of the Languedoc to the west.

If you choose to stay around Carcassonne itself then the site he recommends is a good one, and you can tour the whole area and see some of the other wonderful sights too. You could also choose a Mediterranean site, and just do an 'early start' day trip to Carcassonne if you like beach holidays.

If you've visited Le Mont Saint Michel then it is quite similar in the sense of catering for tourism. That's not to say Carcassonne is not an impressive site - the view from the motorway and elsewhere is spectacular.

Well worth a visit but remember much of what you see is restoration dating back a bit over 150years.

As ValA says a lot to be seen in the area and expect heat at the time you are visiting. The beach camp and day trip is a real alternative. I have a friend who lives in Carcassonne and keeps his boat on the Med. Not a long journey at all.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the replies - most useful & appreciated. I take the point about making Carcassonne town a short stay & will take a look at sites within a reasonable distance. We certainly enjoy getting out & about so pleased there are so many things to do/see there.
