Tyre Ruined By Motor Mover.

Picked my van up Weds morning after my 1st years service & had pointed out to me a groove which had been worn across the full width of my nearside tyre. The groove was obviously caused by my PowrTouch mover & in my opinion definitely merits a new tyre, very annoying in that the tyre has only covered about 4500 miles from new last December.

The groove is about quarter of an inch deep & I can only remember one time when returning my van to my drive that the wheel caught on the slightly raised kerb instead of the normal lowered part & the van spun rapidly to one side. I assume this was caused by the mover digging into the tyre & ripping out the tread blocks.

Going to make some wooden ramps over Christmas to make the kerb easier to manage. .

Had something similar on last 'van. ....went into a pothole leaving our village and it sprung the mover on one side. ...I had gone about 200 yards with just the slightest drag and noticed smoke!...whilst there was some grooving it wasn't too deep and remained usable.

I had this on both tyres on a 2006 Bessacarr. The cause was the fitting of a Truma M1 mover which was not intended for use on caravans with suspension units fitted and I think Bessacarr was one of the first vans to have suspension units fitted as standard. I was annoyed at the dealer who had serviced the van for 4 years without noticing the gradual wear on the tyres as the mover only touched when the mover was engaged.

After some debating I agreed a deal of a new Truma mover and a pair of new tyres from the dealer.

My understanding is that all movers now will accommodate suspension units Truma ones certainly do.

I wonder about that Bill?

Carvers original mover used massive cast alloy gearboxes which would foul as they passed by shock absorbers where fitted, but clear when engaged or off.

I have such a mover fitted to my Bessacarr fitted with shockers and with several tweaks to this and that it just clears. I have then since read, 'it will not fit' as 'it will not fit without modification' and two totally different things

So the slightly later and we are talking long before 2000 when Truma got involved, the gearboxes have been much slimmer and don't to my knowledge cause any problems with fouling. .. if fitted correctly?!

On a technical note, a 2006 Bessacarr is sitting on the same running gear as any other Swift built van, so equally apply to those if fitted with shockers

My first mover was a Reich and, after parking the van up I went on to put down the steadies and pull on the handbrake and could smell burning rubber. Checked the rollers on the near side and fine, still locked on and static. Checked far side and found that the roller there had carried on turning and burnt almost all the way through the tyre. Turned out the 'brain' had gone loopy and hadn't turned the roller off when I parked the van. The dealer fitted a new motherboard and and said all was well but wouldn't compensate for tyre. Had a power touch ever since.

Do you mean shock absorbers? All vans have suspension.

Perhaps badly fitted movers foul the shocker.

Early Carver motor movers had bolts in the alloy gearbox case which were over long and very close to the tyre side wall. When the mover was in the operational position, the load of the tyre on the drive roller caused the mover to deflect sideways bringing the bolt into contact with the tyre. My old mover milled a groove in both tyres on my new caravan when the old mover was fitted. Carver motor movers were (sort of) copied by some other makers. Check the closeness of the mover when it is engaged.

  • 2 weeks later...

Took the wheel off today, 1st dry day for a while, got a quote from my local tyre dealer for £44. 80 + vat so off there shortly.

Thought you might be interested in some photos of the damage.

Annoying thing is how much tread is left on the tyre.
