Hi,

I have looked into this several times over the years, as an alternative cost effective way of getting away instead of the annual ski holiday package, or self drive and agency rental.

Basically I've researched it to death. The package or agency rental is cheaper after taking into account additional costs associated with the ferry, fuel, and toll cost, all the usual stuff, trust me search the owners abroad sites and you can find apartments close to camp site fees, just don't use the big companies try the local agencies, through the resorts accomadation searches. However if I haven't persuaded you to change? try searching on motorhome forums, there seems to be a bigger following with motorhomers, with some hardly campers staying in carparks and using gas with no electric hookup. Must be mad!

Regards Paul.

Whilst we haven't been there, my sons ski (or rather snowboard) every year at Les Contamines, and each year they try to persuade us to take the caravan over and join them. They've suggested we stay at Le Pontet, which is at Les Contamines, and no far from Chamonix. Website here: http://www. lescontamines. com/caravaneige-le-pontet. html The website is the main 'village' website, and you'd need to ring to find out charges/availability for the dates you want.

Hi

Only thing I can think of is a site called motorhomeski. com which although centred around motorhomes, might give you a couple of pointers.

Russell

Online blog and travels, although sometimes there is a lack of travel due to work!

It's an uncharted sea, it's an unopened door but you've got to reach out and you've got to explore.

Easter 2014 is 18 -21 April and quite late for skiing.

Rented accommodation will be at peak prices as will the ferry crossings.

Chamonix camp sites here http://tinyurl. com/qcptqff but check they are 'caravaneige' winter sites although by April/Easter most sites will be open.

Thanks for your replies. Some good avenues to explore. The 'it's not really any cheaper' post is interesting. Maybe I'll try pricing that.

I'm off to the south of France next month. Worked out cheaper to fly, hire a car and stay in a log cabin slightly outside the ski resort compared to staying in an apartment at the resort. I wasn't going to entertain taking the van but take the car. It just worked out much cheaper the way I finally did it. The car will also have the option of snow chains.

Caravanless. ...

I went skiing when I was a kid and always wanted to do it again but never got round to it.

Now there's kids to pay for too it just seems too expensive.

Keep us updated with your findings as I'd love to do it at some point money permitting.

Just beginning our adventure. 95% of my time on CT I use my phone. As a result correct spelling and grammer will be used sparingly. This is due to fat fingers. Please don't let it bother you.

We stayed here in the summer; it is within walking distance of the ski cabin. http://www. samoens. com/en/summer/my-accommodation/camping-caravaning/camping-le-giffre. html. The village is lovely too. http://www. telegraph. co. uk/travel/snowandski/9148590/Ski-France-is-Samoens-the-countrys-best-resort. html and you can take day trips to Chamonix fairly easily.

Enjoy every minute of every day. It doesn't last nearly as long as you'd like, and there's no guarantee of coming this way again.

We wouldn't rush to return early season and they did seem to be majoring on chalets. . but it's within driving range of Chamonix and the lakes nice for a walk.

For my son's Stag do we rented this apartment right in the centre of Chamonix and can highly recommend it. ...

Having been in May with the 'van (enroute to Lake GArda) and in February without. ... ie Flying. . I'd recommend the latter if you're just staying in Chamonix for skiing.

If you want collecting from Geneva Airport. . my son's Best Man runs. .. http://www. cham-van. com/en/
