Hello

I've recently bought a carver cascade 2 water heater for my campervan conversion and it has a corroded water tank that is leaking water, my question is will a carver rapide water tank fit the cascade 2

KInd regards

Yes, all standard 9 litre tanks are the same size so interchangeable, however, the element hole for a 'rapide' is slightly larger for the fatter 850w element and the two fixing bolt holes set 1mm further apart between centres.

Smaller 630w element will fit perfectly well if you slot the bolt holes in the element outward and use new seals, other way round the larger element fits older tanks if you open the tanks element hole 1/2mm all the way round and slot elements bolt holes 1mm closer together.

NEVER slot bolt holes in tank

Hello Gary

Thanks very much for your reply i forgot to say it is a gas only heater and the tank i'm looking for has the larger bolt hole i think its 16mm.

Will the rapide have the same bolt hole?

Kind regards

Err. ..no!..... with the mention of Rapide I'd forgotten about pre90's tanks.

So what's the exact problem with the original tank?

Hello Gary

The problem with the original tank is its leaking between tank and heat exchanger which i can fix with a new o/ring, but what's worse is the tank has corrosion at a point that was on the underside when it was sited and is perforated so i can see water seeping through when i fill it.

Well you maybe able to reseal it, provided without seals the tank sits firmly on the casting and is unable to turn if you push hard down while trying to turn it. If though it can be turned, then 'frost damage' is the root cause of this leak

As for the corrosion, all tanks have a sizable air gap at the top, with gas only tanks then you turn the corrosion to the top and seal the corrosion on the outside.

This is all work I commonly do and is 100% successful

Yesterday though I was a bit hasty? all tanks are of the same critical dimensions, the smaller hole of a later tank can then be opened up to 16mm to suit the older tie rod, I'd forgotten but some years ago, I had made blanking plates to seal up the elements hole to convert GE tanks into a gas

Thanks Gary

The nice smooth coating on the inside of the tank is broken where the perforation is and its quite sharp, what would be a good method of sealing the tank on the outside.

Sorry, I don't hand out that sort of hard earned knowledge on the internet for all to read!

However and in case you have missed it, this has turned up today on ebay?
