Wheel Clamps Etc.

Recommended Posts

Hi again folks. I am totally new to caravanning and am learning new things every day from this brilliant forum and its extremely helpful members.

One of my friends gave me a couple of his magazines to read and yesterday I was shocked to read of a couple who had their van stolen from the driveway of their home during the early hours of a stormy night and they heard nothing.

What was really worrying was the fact that the van had a hitchlock and whellclamp fitted and they also mentioned chains, I've no idea where these chains were fitted. How on earth did the thieves manage to take the van so easily and quietly?

Having read this article I would like to ask fellow members for their recommendations as to the best wheel clamps available at the moment.

I have a hitchlock fitted at the moment along with a wheel clamp but I'm not sure how good they are. They came with the van which I purchased second hand.

Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. thank you

It's eBay, think VM is being a bit over-cautious. ..

Don't you have to change a heavier wheel bolt for a replacement that puts the wheel out of balance ?

I have spent some time on this issue of wheel bolts, written to Alko no reply, so as I wanted one I went to our local wheel specialist who said as its so close to the axis it will make no difference. I have it fitted and no difference noticed at all. there are different answers from people but for me I am happy to use it.

Do you get 2 bolts? Generally I would use the offside and certainly when using an awning but in storage I prefer to put it on the nearside which is in view of camera.

It looks very appealing and an easy fit.

IMO I would of thought it could lead to warranty issues . Wheels are balanced to an accuracy of grams .

Have you weighed the bolt for the difference ?

I have posted elsewhere on this and the receiver I have to replace my wheel bolt with weighs 1/4lb mor than the wheel bolt. I fit this on site and use a torque device to replace my wheel bolt before the return journey. I have difficulty believing that a 1/4lb extra weight even though on the wheel hub does not interfere with wheel balance. I recall that brake drums had a balance weight spot welded on the drum.

I have emailed Purpleline and not received a satisfactory answer.

Hi

Your caravan is more likely to be stolen from your drive than a storage site. We use a CoSSOA gold storage site which to my knowledge has never had a caravan stolen from it. You still need to put on your hitch and wheel lock.

The cost can be expensive but it has a few benefits:

1. Likely to get a discount on your caravan insurance

2. If you keep your caravan at home, when it is not their it is a big notice saying you are away.

3. You keep the neighbours happy.

Seems a step backwards when it has taken years for the caravan and chassis industry to come the conclusion that vibration causes damage to caravan structures and wheel detachment .

Is this correct? I heard the opposite as they were all in one place usually in an isolated part of a town.

Would make an interesting poll on where vans were stolen from. Actually insurance companies should have the stats.

there are two bolts one for alloys and a longer one for wider wheels, the latter is the heavier one. I am lucky to have the smaller one fitted. In the very unusual circumstance of a warranty dispute it would be between your caravan dealer and Purpleline. As nearly all dealers sell these its unlikely ever to be an issue. There are many rear wheels out there on cars that are significantly out of balance and no one knows because they cant feel it due to the axle type. If You are really worried like I was originally, jack up you van and remove the bolts and wheel. put all the bolts back in the hub including the right Nemeses bolt for your wheels. Now spin the hub several times, you will find that it stops in random places which signifies that the Nemeses bolt is not affecting the balance as it would always be at the bottom when the wheel stops if it was. This is such a great and very easy to use clamp don't be put off.

Has anyone used the NEMESIS ULTRA wheel lock? It looks a bit like the Al-KO Secure Wheel Lock but appears to be much cheaper.

You would also need to read the T&C on your insurance if they quote a "AKLO LOCK " . for this type of lock .

I clicked on the link in post 5 and it wasn't the one that I had looked at earlier. I then clicked on the one in post 6 and that was the one. It does look a reasonable jobby.

To brilock1 - does the actual bar that goes through the wheel go into the tube that the AL-KO system uses or does it merely go through the wheel far enough to foul the chassis if the wheel is rotated?

Just through the wheel and fouls the chassis but beware my post 13

Giving ideas on thieving caravans.

Its always best to point out that wheel clamps and hitch locks are ONLY deterants!

The OP is new to caravanning I have read many threads some quite heartbreaking where owners believed their caravan was safe from theft because they fitted "aproved" security and kept irreplaceable items in their stolen van.

No one reading this forum will learn anything in detail about thieving caravans.

It requires knowledge not normally found in the realms of D-I-Y EG obtaining and usage of burning gear very hard not to say impossible to get bottles legally without a traceable account these days.

It requires the multiple use of vehicles and man power plus an organisation to sell on the van because most are stolen to order.

If you are storing a caravan on your driveway and its on a through road it will be eyeballed because caravan thieves like rats seem to scent caravans from many miles away!

Why give new owners a false sense of security?

Get your van insured use the approved devices and store it preferably on a secure site.

Yes this is correct. The only proof i need is the fact that by having my caravan in storage I get a substantial discount on my insurance.
