We're booking into Sandy Balls in August and apparently they have a bit of the river Avon for fishing.

Anyway, I've never been inclined to try fishing, but my 12 year old step-son would love to. I'd like to surprise him, but I haven't a clue where to start.

I know I need a stick, some string & a whatsit on the end, but that's about it.

Any help for a no-idea beginner would be greatly appreciated please.

Look here.

A very basic set to get you going, just add bait which can be almost anything,,,sweetcorn, luncheon meat, maggots, mealworms

Also print this off:

Gav - if there's a Boyes store near you, call in, they always have a good range of decent rods at really good prices. They also sell bait, floats, lead shot - in fact everything to start you off!

The tackle and kit you buy will be dictated by what kind of fishing you want to do - if it's coarse fishing, I'd suggest float fishing is as good as any for a beginner. Then you don't need much more than a rod, reel, line, float, some lead weight, and some ground bait, and a net, and things like a disgorger to unhook a fish, and some hooks. Some worms or maggots from a local tackle shop, if allowed on that stretch; or alternatively use some sweetcorn or bread on your hook! (I prefer maggots, but not everyone does!)

There's loads of good sites on the internet - try this for starters:

http://www. fish-uk. com/beginners_guide_to_coarse_fishing_page_1. htm

and maybe get a book from your local library.

The bst advice though, is not to spend an absolute fortune on expensive kit until you know if you're going to have more than a couple of goes. And don't be put off by what can seem a complicated hobby - it's only as complicated (or expensive) as you choose to make it.

Personally nowadays I prefer fly fishing, but that's a bit different to explain!

Good luck - it'll be worth the effort!

Even though you have permission to fish the Avon you will still need a rod licence for anyone aged 12 or over.

Available from the Environment Agency,or in some cases your local Post Office.

Various periods catered for.

Ask your son, he probably knows all there is to know about fishing IF he is interested.

I had always fished and been shooting and assumed my boys would be the same,

I was disappointed! they had only a passing interest, to humour me.

You can take a boy/girl to water but you cannot make them fish!

Try to find out more about the stretch of the river that you intend to fish then visit your local tackle shop for advice.

A lot of money is wasted on inappropriate tackle and fishing tackle catches many more anglers than it does fish !

Do you have fishing facilities?

Yes, Sandy Balls has 1/3 mile of the beautiful river Avon, a challenging stretch of water with a variety of swims. Fishing tackle and bait can be purchased from the Cycle Centre. Closed season 15th March to 15th June.

Do you need a permit/licence to fish?

Yes you will need a permit which can be purchased from the Cycle Centre. You will also require an Enviornmental Agency Rod Licence available from the local Post Offices, www. postoffice. co. uk or by calling 0844 800 5386.

"After unpacking and settling in, Les arrived to take us down the hill through the extensive woods to Sandy Balls' own section of the Hampshire Avon which holds the biggest recorded barbel from the river at over 161bs. Les himself has caught barbel to well over 121bs and chub to 5lb 10oz from this water. This in-form section also yields monstrous roach to over 3lb. However, that was not to be the case this particular evening when we legered flavoured meats for a couple of hours. After a spectacular sunset the events of the day caught up with us and we decided to pack up, ready for fishing the following day".

There seems to be a lot of info about, the Sandy Balls stretch of river (Hampshire Avon) there is also a lake close by, handy if the river is in spate.

Get yourself to the local carboot.

Even experienced anglers i fish with keep coming back with bargains.

I caught my first fish with a cheap kit from Woolies.

Has your step son fished before?

If he hasn't and you yourself are a novice that stretch of the river would be difficult. Theres nothing worse than trying to teach a youngster fishing when their not catching boredom easily sets in. There are loads of coarse angling still waters in that area where you could take a cheap float setup and both learn a new skill whilst catching. Any of the anglers will tell you on here theres nothing worse than blanking.

This is a great vid to learn from
