Hi Den123,

Your question is almost like asking "How long is a piece of string"!

The accurate answer is dependent upon many factors, among which the main ones are:-

  1. What is the electrical current taken by the Alarm System ?
  2. What is the capacity of the battery in question?
  3. What type of battery is being referred to?
  4. What is the condition and age of the battery?
  5. Is the battery to be subjected to sub-zero temperatures?

Generally speaking, the larger the capacity of the battery the longer it will last until it reaches its fully discharger state. A high quality battery will also retain its capacity for a longer period than a cheaply made one. That said, even without a load across the battery terminals, all batteries will slowly discharge over a period of time.

If you can give some more detailed information, then we can give you a better idea of the timescale before the battery becomes fully discharged ('flat'),

Regards,

David

Difficult to say without knowing the current that the alarm takes, but assuming that it is around 50mA (0. 05 Amps), then it would consume a total of 8. 4 A/Hr in a week. (0. 05 x 24 x 7 = 8. 4).

On this assumption, and not taking into account the normal slight auto-discharge losses from the battery, it would last you 10 weeks at most. .

Hope that this helps.

Regards,

David

Before I had a solar panel to keep mine topped up my 85AH battery was almost dead in about a month or just over with no charger whilst in storage as we're seasonal so when the site closes for winter the electric goes off and the battery was always charging with a mains charger but not sure if that's the norm or not. This will be our first winter trying out solar panels and seeing how long the batteries last.

Even with no load a battery in storage should be recharged every 3-6 months anyway to compensate for internal leakage. They should not be allowed to remain at a low state of charge otherwise a permanent loss of capacity may occur.
