Tying Down Awning

Shortly to spend a week on North Devon Coast, First week away with our 1980's Swift.

We bought a (6/7 yr old) Dorema (size 4! pre- buckles) awning which is great but I'm concerned

about what I should do if the wind gets up? Visited Towsure. .. there was a 'Tie-down'

strap with tensioning spring that goes over the top of the awning (£8 - bargain?)or a set

of 3 adjustable straps that look to hook onto the awning poles (the bits that stick up at the end -

technical description you understand!) Any experiences or advice as to what to do?

thank you. ...

Only my view having suffered the lashings of hurricane katia in Scotland - lash the canvas not the frame. ...

It's the canvas that billows away from the frame so get a sprung strap right over the top of the canvas - job done.

you just got in before me there madrunner, we were up very north of Scotland couple of years ago and the van next to us had a strap over the top and the awning hardly moved in very strong winds

might be an idea to put something on the strap to stop it rubbing the awning material something like the foam that they use to lag water/heating pipes pushes on lovely and doesnt inter fear with the straps at all, martin

Excellent, thank you for the replies. ... strap to go over it is. ... the box said for use when necessary due to possible wear

on the awning fabric. ... so thanks for the tip Olblueeyes!

Our awning almost blew down in the high winds earlier this year so a couple took most of it down just to secure it until we got up (seasonal pitch). I ordered some storm straps, the "three" you're talking about and after hurricaine katia and this week's high winds it's still standing! - Except a tear in one of the side "windows" i'm going to have to get repaired when it comes down as ust done a temporary repair myself.

  it was a big tin

As a precaution (especialy if coming up to Scotland) why not just buy the strap and the set especially if they are not that expensive.

We use the seat belt anti-chafe covers on our storm strap

to protect the edges of the awning. A Half Twist either side

in the strap stops it "thrumming" in the wind. Fitting and pegging

the draught skirt stops the wind fom lifting the canvas off the frame.

The awning needs to be properly pegged down, NOT those

silly wire pegs! keep a set of long Rock pegs or if on grass

long strong triangular section metal or plastic pegs.

During one 50-70mph gusting weekend, all the expensive

full length curved style awnings had their wire pegs ripped out

and the wind shook them to rags.

I also find the plastic pegs to be the best :) Tried the metal ones but they just ping out the ground when the wind gets up

be most benevolent next week. .... please!

Thanks for the anti - thrumming tip Gumdrop. I'll give it a try next time.

  • 3 weeks later...

South Wales last week, very strong winds, front of awning getting the full force. Plenty of guying points used with no problem at all.
