Rear Handle Loose

Hi, the NSR grab handle on our Coachman VIP is lose.

Not the actual handle, but if you pull on it the plastic panel moves, so I'm guessing its not fastened underneath the panel.

I took the handle off and there are 2 screws on each side (of the handle) that hold the handle mountings in place.

so it appears the screws arent long enough? to reach a secure mounting point (wood?) under the plastic panel.

kinda hard to explain, hope you understand what I mean!

Any ideas?

Much more likely that the wood that the screws go into is rotting.

I've not known grab handles coming loose unless there is rot somewhere, so you need to investigate further. If there is rot, sticking longer screws in will only mean the damage will get far worse by the time you actually get around to doing a proper repair.

Handles on any caravan are best used for pushing and not pulling or you could end up with it in your hand . Even a well secure handle and fixings can be loosened by pulling and let water causing damp problems in the future .

Were the screws rusty that you took out?

If they were it is a sure sign of damp. Can you get access inside the van to the back of the handle fixing point?

A piece of strong ply held inside for bolts (in place of screws) from handle may be best fix. Apply mastic between the handle and the outer skin.

This is long winded. ..but short and low cost to try . Try injecting a wood hardener through the screw holes until it overflows . Make up a waterproof flap that you can gaffa tape on three sides around the mounting . Leave the flap open at the bottom to aid air circulation and drying without allowing rain in . When you judge the wood has dried out and hardened, inject a suitable wood filler into the screw holes that will accept screws . When this is dry put a bead of sealant around the handle mount and replace, screw in tightly and make sure sealant oozes . Clean up and test for soundness . If all is good, avoid further leaks by pushing, not pulling on the handle . Hopefully the leak was not from the window surround and all will be well . If the panel gives and creaks after the repair then you will have to remove the inner wall board and see how much rot is there and where it is coming from .
