Battery Charging Question

Recommended Posts

Due to a fault on our vans electrics we have had to resort to a battery charger as a (temporary) method of charging our leisure battery.

This is a 110 amp hour battery.

The charger (purchased from a caravan shop) has 2 12 volt settings, one a 2amp charge, the other an 8amp charge. Which would be more appropriate for my battery?

The 2 amp should be ok,

The 8 amp is more for giving a dead flat battery a kick start, before reverting back to the 2 amp, to compleat the charge

Thanks for that, I've left it running & I'll just charge it & keep it on trickle.

Not for too long I hope, unless its a fancy float type,

I would give it an overnight charge, then leave it an hour or so then before checking it,

Battery charger rating is normally worked out as 1 Amp per 10 Amphours battery capacity approximately, so your 110 AH battery should be ok with a charger up to 11 amps.

I'd use the 8 amp setting, given your choice.

If you were charging it in the caravan it would get 12 - 20 amps, depending on the power supply fitted.

Only went on at teatime, and the charger does claim to charge then maintain the battery, so hopefully it is one of those fancy float jobbies.
