NOT TO START WITH HAVE BEEN PUSHED FROM PILLAR TO POST ALL DAY NOW WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO COME TAKE STATEMENT AFTER I LOST MY TEMPER AND EXPRESSED MY CONCERNS THAT THIS WAS SOMEONES PRIDE AND JOY WITH A VALUE OF ABOUT £7000 AND WHILE THEY WHERE DOING NOTHING THEY COULD BE RECOVERING THIS VAN AND ARRESTING SOMEONE FOR A CRIME

Glad you pushed it and got at least some action.

I was in a dealers yesterday and a chap was having a new tow hitch fitted after recovering his own caravan!..yes he did it himself?.

Apparently driving down the motorway he spied a van similar to his and on catching up recognised a small dent above the cassette toilet door. He rang the police on his mobile and talked them in, the thief was duly arrested and is in prison awaiting trial.

He said it made him feel a lot better about the dent than at the time he made it in his brand new van!!

Caravans have CRiS regestered numbers etched into the windows you can get information checked before you part with hard earned cash.

to quote

The CRiS scheme is an important tool in the fight against caravan crime. As the central database for caravan owner registrations it is a key component, not just in identifying stolen caravans, but in combating finance and insurance fraud. Insurance companies and Police are able to carry out initial CRiS enquiries online through HPI Check ltd. . All caravans manufactured by members of the National Caravan Council since 1992 have been automatically registered with CRiS and since 1997 have had the additional benefit of an electronic transponder fitted to allow covert checking by police forces. Since early 2001, the scheme has also accommodated caravans manufactured before 1992 and an application pack is available direct from CRiS. It is essential that when buying a used caravan the purchaser carrys out a CRiS check. For a modest fee, they can then buy confidently knowing that the caravan they are buying is what the seller claims it to be.

Do you know Liz the CRiS info is useful in the antipodies too. I phoned them about a recently imported Bailey Ranger 550/6 2003 model & was advised the serial no did not match. Ie it was stolen in the UK & exported 12,000 miles to NZ only to be spotted as nicked! unfortunately the authorities here weren't that interested when I informed them so someone else has bought it.

It is really annoying isnt it if the law took people seriously they would be able to recover a lot of stolen vans.

Maybe if one of the chief constables had had one stolen at the time one of us were reporting one they might look into it.

The van i was going to buy had actually been stolen in 2003 if the law had acted when i informed them the caravan would have been recovered and an arrest made, i was very frustrated with them, actually i am still waiting for them to come and take a written statement that sums up just how serious they think a stolen caravan is.
