New To Caravaning!

Hello all! I am new to caravaning. Well, i used to go when i was young with my parents. I was out in the caravan this last weekend and had to make do without a fridge as i cannot seem to get the fridge cold. I felt heat for a while from the vent at the top but then nothing. We had it switched onto the mains hook-up for well over three hours but it still didn't seem to do anything else. What can i do? I'm not keen on using the gas to keep it on as i have four children and am very wary of using gas etc. Also as i understand the battery is really only for when you are in transit. ..is this right?

I signed up on this site last night after reading lots of interesting threads and tried sites recommended for the instruction manuals but i typed in the product details etc and couldn't find a manual for this fridge (Electrolux RM212B) any suggestions?

I look forward to many years caravaning and giving my children lots of happy memories. ...therefore, i think i will be visiting this site often for the interesting topics and advice. Happy caravaning all!

Thanks, Joanne

Hi, thanks for your post. I have tried the site recommended and just cannot seem to get it to register which manual i need. ..it says there aren't any?? If anybody has a copy they could scan for me and email across i would be very grateful. I am confused as to what to do with it. I looked on ebay for one just in case mine is completely no good and was so surprised to see how much they sell for even second hand! We have already booked another holiday for in a couple of months time and cannot wait! . ..Dont think my freezer bag will last through the whole of this break though! lol

Hi and welcome to the site.

We had problems with our fridge when we first started caravanning and it turned out to be a user error. .

You need to make sure your caravan is level, We were told that if the van was out of level by 5 degrees the fridge would not work. This sorted the problems for us and hope it may help you.

Happy caravanning. .

Hi Joanne,

Welcome to the forum.

First of all, let me say that using gas to cool your fridge should not cause you concern whether you have children or not. The small pilot flame burns in the base of the unit and is completely isolated from the interior of the caravan. The fresh air to feed the flame is drawn from outside, and the burnt gas exhausts back to the exterior. Fresh air is also drawn from the outside and passed over the heat exchanger and this too exahsts to the exterior. On the RM212 absorption fridge the small flame should be visible through a viewing window set inside the fridge near the bottom.

When running on 240V mains, the heat previously supplied by the gas flame, is replaced with an electric element. The 12V system works in a similar way except that the current drawn is much higher and will quickly flatten a car battery unless the engine is running.

I cannot locate the instruction manual in English, but a German copy can be found here. Since Electrolux were rebranded (taken over by?) "Dometic" some years ago, you may find further useful information on this site.

This may also be of interest, and the's also some good advice on this thread.

Gordon.

The RM212 comes in three styles, A, B and F, all though work in the same way, the most common problem is the cocktail of fluids within the cooling unit separating. This prevents the cooler working until they are remixed and can be simply done by turning the fridge over and over several times.

Another reason is the electric element failing which again is straightforward to replace.

Of course both faults require the fridge to be removed and reinstalled and will most likely then need an expert.

As an aside, I've often wondered why a,b and f, and what happened to c,d, and e?

It stuck me the other day that the letters simply refer to the colour of the cabinet, Aluminium, Black/Brown and Fawn?!
