Tow Ball Height

Towball height is relevant to the tow vehicle, rather than the caravan. In theory, all approved towbars should set the ball at the correct height.

The present relevant standard (BS AU 113c), and for newer vehicles, EC Directive 94/20, requires the centre of the ball, when the towing vehicle is fully LADEN to its gross vehicle weight (but without the caravan attached) to be between 350mm (13. 77") and 420mm (16. 54") from the ground.

The standards for towball height only apply to private cars which AREN'T off-roaders or car-derived vans, for which there is no standard

Thanks Roger. Sorry, forgot that bit, especially relevant looking at "Mr Decembers" avatar.

OK from Swift today" The height of the hitch for my caravan should be 430mm +/- 35mm.

Therefore 430mm = 16 15/16"

465mm = 18 3/16"

395mm = 15 9/16"

That's from the floor to the centre of the hitch.

All is now crystal clear. Thanks to all who responded.
