julesmart
Hi every one, took the van out for only the 2nd time over the week end. Our Peugeot seemed to struggle a bit, was considering a Mondeo as these are supposed to be good towers only trouble is theres loads of mondeo models out there, which one do we pick I like the look of the new Titanium. angus
Well the Mondeo will be a bit heavier, and have a higher noseweight limit, but if you are struggling for power you wont find much difference as they are essentially the same engines. If you use `whattowcar` they give them both identical ratings. Edited April 14, 2009 by angus
Jaydug
At a quick glance your Pug 407 should be more than capable to tow your van. Your car has the same engine and transmission as my C5 which copes extremely well. Before making a change I would check that all is well first. Brakes not binding on both car and van; tyre pressures correct and that the engine is breathing correctly. logiclee
I've towed 1500kg with 130/140bhp 2. 0TDi's and while there is enough power and torque to make a good towcar it's not really comfortable or effortless I agree. If you do go for the Mondeo there is a choice of two engines with far more go than your 2. 0 Deisel. The 2. 2 TDCi has 175bhp and a massive 295lbft, that's as much torque as a 2. 8 CRD Jeep Cherokee. Then there's the 2. 5T Petrol with 220bhp and 236lbft. The torque looks lower but don't be fooled, maximum torque is available anywhere from 1500rpm right to 5000rpm and not just at one peak. The gearing is lower than the diesel as well which means more torque at the wheels. It's an awesome tow car and has won many Towcar awards. If you can afford the fuel it's a great solo drive as well. As for handling and stability the Mk4 Mondeo is miles in front of the 407. chillypenguin
Have a look on Ford Direct; http://www. ford. co. uk/Cars/FordDirect/VehicleLocator And even if you can't find the car you want its worth asking a Ford main dealer, as they must be able to see upcoming stock. It does not specify the max towing weight but it is likely to be the 1800kg as you say. However, I would be very reluctant to tow such a weight with it as the kerbweight of the Titanium estate is only 1611 kg so the 85% figure is 1370kg, but having said that I tow a 1450kg hymer Nova 470 with a 1496kg mondeo Mk3 TDCi and it is a superb towcar at those weights. The new mondeo won the overall towcar of the year from the CC in 2007 with the 2. 5 petrol and the 2. 0 TDCi came out top in it's group of the same competition. If if you're not happy with the 407's performance then you should be looking at the 2. 2 diesel or 2. 5 petrol.
