lexuscol
I post this on behalf of a friend of mine who does not own a computer and has asked for my help. John has the same van as I do a 1998 Sterling with an Electrolux fridge. His fridge has stopped working, it will light but does not cool also the electrics work but again no cooling. The fridge has been taken out and turned upside down for a few days then replaced back in the van with no effect. Does anyone know if these fridges can be repaired and of a decent trustworthy repairer or is it a case of trying to source another one which could prove difficult due to age? Thanks for the help. metz
Hi Col, If the fridge dosn't work on any source then the chances are the cooling unit is faulty, depending on the age and model number of the fridge, you may be able get a replacment cooling unit, any decent caravan repair shop should be able to give you this information, and carry out the work. Col Suggest you take it to your nearest Service Force, they know what they are doing. From my expeiance a lot of so called tech guy's just keep putting bits in until it works whereas when i eventually took it to SF they rang hour later and told me what is wrong and how much. They charge £50 plus parts, thats 2 weeks ago.
Brecon
A 1998 fridge wil not have a replaceable cooling unit, it will mean a new fridge unfortunately Edited April 10, 2009 by Brecon
lexuscol
Thanks for the advice, I thought as much due to age of fridge Electrolux 4230. It is over the wheelarch and I am led to believe by a guy at Swift that they are no longer made or fitted. Anyone have any thoughts on an alternative solution? Arc Systems
62xx series cooler units are available and they fit, slight mounting differences but none that matter to a competent fitter, cost should be circa £150-£175 42xx series coolers do go down and I've failed once or twice to get them going again, however turning over and leaving is not the way of going about it You simply need to remix the cocktail inside and you can do this as vigorously as you wish, over and over several times with no more the 20 seconds between turns is a good start. What your aimng for is 13 seconds of 'trickling' of the fluid inside, after turning several times count the last time to the last drop has gone back to the bottom. Using mains you can then immediately connect it up without reinstalling it and see if it's started to work. It's of no benefit whatsoever to let it stand rightway up or on it's head. If not then I've took the cooler out and give it some serious shaking, this has worked a few times. Also check resistance across the 240v element, you need 470ohms or very close, I've come across 370 odd before now and that's overheating, might also not be working on the gas correctly and nothing wrong with the cooler. Working correctly, nothing happens for the first 40 minutes while fluid heats up and gets moving, it should then rapidly drop in temperature to below zero in the freezer in the next 20 minutes, total temp drop is around -32c so that less ambient in the freezer after 2-3hrs Edited April 11, 2009 by Arc Systems Quote Arc Systems are specialist Carver caravan product repairers, committed to providing a comprehensive service as well as spare parts for these popular heaters.
