Urgent Help/advice Needed

Set up the caravan yesyerday and filed the on board water tank. Thought nothing of till the bathroom tap was used and ony just barley trickled water. Upon inspection the wife noticed a large flow/drip of water from beneath the van. Under the bed was flooded. Could only be one of two things, split pipe or cracked heater pump. Sadly its the latter, so having found the offending crack on the underside of the heater case, can i patch it with some sort of fixing adhesive ( was thinking about "Sikaflex") or does it mean a new heater. The other prob is all the pipes on the heater are atatched with some sort of metal band that dont look as if they will come off and replace. So will jubile clips do the same job when reatatching the pipes.

Away for a week as i type and no running water so as much advice as poss appreciated.

Nigel, sadly it is a new heater as the plastic the Therme is made of does not take to being repaired, especially with Sikaflex.

The clips holding the pipes on can be replaced with Jubilee clips with no problems.

Having found yourself in the position of having to make a heater change, maybe it is time to think of upgrading from the rather pathetic Therme to either the 14 ltr Elektroboiler if you dont want to go cutting holes in the van side or for the Ultrastore to get the benefit of both gas and electric heating options.

Neither is a cheap solution though.

Hi Brecon,

How about liquid meta, the type with two tubes similar to araldite, or some sort of themo plastic. I dont relish the idea of repacing or upgrading as althiugh it handy having hot running water its not really used that much and this past year or two we havent used the van much. I prob use it the most for a quick shave in between shower days.

Thaere must be some sort of compound that will adere to the shel, but having said that, i cant test that theres no internal damage.

Is yours a pressure switched system or microswitches?. If the former then any sort of glue would have troubles holding the pressure (usually 1 - 2 bar = 15-30psi) You might be in with a chance with a microswitched system where it isn't actually pressurised although the restriction at the shower head might let it build up sufficient pressure to cause another leak

I'm at a bit of a loss here? the therme has an outer plastic cover that simply clips on to the water tank, under that is a similar plastic container or is it? the finned hole through the middle is aluminium?

That's as much as I know of the construction!

Hi

In reply to Dave, all i can tell you at the mo is the heater plugs in to a mains socket next to it under the bed, has various pipes in and out, heater pipes in and out. No other switches or controls other than a single on/off switch above the hob. The taps however ui think have a micro switch as theres a small click when operated. Havent used the shower for a while but again just a lever for water suppy. As for pressure i cant tell you. Im trying to work through the user book looking for hints but the book isnt up to much.

Hi Gary,

Yes your correct, the heater has an outer shell which i assume is some sort of heat protecter, its the main tank inside that that i can feel a two inch crack in, seems to have distorted the body slightly but until i can completely remove im still a little in the dark as to the full extent of the damage, Any damage inside is another kettle of fish, but im hoping £10 to £20 spent trying to repair the crack is a better first option than £170 for a new one without trying.

Thanks for your continued help.

The Therme is a 5 ltr plastic tank with an aluminium centre core which is connected to the blow air heating( you are allegedly supposed to be able to heat the water just using the blow air!)

Inside the water tank is a 300w heating element and the whole thing is covered by a plastic heat shield.

The problem is the plastic used is not very repair friendly as when the water is heated, the plastic expands, so any repair is liable to break at the seal it made when applied to a cold unit.

A possibility may be welding the split together with a hot knife or soldering iron, but whether it holds for any length of time is doubtful.

Nigel will have a microswitched system using a standard sub pump so not a great pressure problem to contend with.

The plastex repair that has been mentione dlooks good if it does what it says in the advert blurb, but I have not tried it so cannot give a sound answer as to whether it actually does or does not work.

Havent had much chance to do anything with the heater yet, not many shops in the area we're staying at and dont want any missed deliveries off the net till i get home. However, having spoken to a few more people, one has suggested Petropatch, apparently used for fixing petrol tanks, metal and plastic. Anyone any further comments or ideas, though the expanding when hot may still be a prob.

thanks
