Portsmouth Ferry Terminal

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are sailing to Spain in mid May and should arrive in Portsmouth about 4 to 5 pm to catch the 8pm Ferry. Is it possible to stay in the terminal with the van for this period of time - what do others do ?.

Many thanks

Hi Nidge - yes, there's plenty of parking area either side of the check-in booths.

You shouldn't have any problem parking. Plenty of room. Park and walk up to the check in and ask them where you can park for a few hours. They may well put you in line for the ferry as there is only the one sailing.

Alternatively, why don't you arrive later?

as we are not too keen on the catering facilities in the Portsmouth port we usually make ourselves a snack to eat while we are waiting - then have dinner on the boat.

Assume you are going on the Pride of Bilbao ship - we find the breakfasts and snacks on board very expensive so take snacks, cereals and our kettle + coffee + tea + milk etc with us and brew up in the cabin. the evening meals in either the carvery or "proper" restaraunt are good.

If you are coming back from Bilbao, you can stay overnight on the port there or stay some 60 miles away at Camping Du Haro.

enjoy your trip.

Never had a problem parking at Portsmouth ferry terminal, even overnight. If on Britanny, the catering is quite reasonable of of fair quality, unlike P&O.

Thanks John for your reply.

We are traveling from Derbyshire and always like to arrive at our destination with plenty of time to spare. You can never judge the traffic hold up's, accidents or say a puncture etc. Our arrival time is only approx anyway, so judging by the replies I do not see any problem with parking at the terminal.

We are also using the Bilbao sailing for the first time and I was wondering what time they start to load? We're thinking of stopping somewhere about an hour away and having a meal. It would be nice if we could do this and arrive at the port around the time that things start to move.

Also, on the Hull Zeebrugge sailing the evening meal and breakfast are of a buffet type, is it the same on the Bilbao sailing?

Thanks,

Dally

There were bad holdups on the M27 just outside Portsmouth last time we went that way, also A34 around Oxford, so wise to add extra time.

From memory, I think they start to let you through the check-in around 5 pm. You then wait in a large "holding-area" until about 6 or 6. 30. From here, you proceed to a boarding area close to the ship, until you are signalled to board.

Again from memory, the eating arrangements are very similar to the H-Z service. We found it quite awkward trying to find somewhere to eat (and park the caravan) on the approach to Portsmouth, and now settle for a meal as soon as we board - it then feels as though the holiday has just begun.

We have relations in Portsmouth and would like to meet them at the ferry terminal while we wait for the evening boat. Is it possible to park inside the entrance but in a place where our rellies can get out again?

They may be able to park outside the gates and walk to the terminal building as if foot passengers and meet you there. I'd ring and check if I were you.

Hi Bryan - there is a multi storey car park just outside the ferry terminal if they can't get inside.
