I've fitted a new Victron solar controller, are settings ok??

Recommended Posts

I've fitted one of these to my caravan and I have a AGM leisure 95Ah battery.

I contacted Yuasa and asked for voltage/charge settings, below is the reply.  Are these OK?

"General charging recommendations for AGM leisure batteries are 14.8V ± 0.2V on bulk/fast charge, and 13.6V ± 0.2V on float/standby charge, both quoted at 25°C. Current input should be limited to 1/10th label capacity for general recharging"

My solar panel is 100w so current shouldn't be a problem???

This is my settings, would an expert please check, thanks.

Data Sheet for your Victron range controller

BULK aka Absorption Voltage = 14.4 V (lead acid) - but 'adjustable' to the 14.8V your gel needs

Float = 13.8V (lead acid) - also 'adjustable' down to the gel spec.

Probably unlikely to get > the 1/10 95Ah charge rate out of the 100 W panels - even though nominally it can do up to 15A and s/c is 20A.

You may need to : read the manual : for it to set it up to suit the Gel battery.  By default it's wet lead acid settings.

Sorry can't help with the setting as I've had no experience with AGM, but can't help thinking that the controller is massive overkill unless you are going to upgrade to a lot of panels!

A 75/10 would have been OK for a 100w panel and  almost half the price of the 100/20

The stated battery is an AGM , not GEL but voltage wise these are the same.

What does the "Battery presets" drop down menu offer?

Though the manual setting you have selected are what I would choose. I would prefer using an AGM preset if available as this would introduce durations the phases are held for and probably rule out any maintenance routine.

Edit: On second look I see you have correctly "disabled" equalisation as they call it.

I would make sure the equalization operation is disabled.  This is employed periodically to gas off the electrolyte and stir it up. 16.2volts can be accomodated by lead/acid batteries, but AGM batteries have little electrolyte to gas off.

Op has changed the post from gel to AGM and added an image of the settings.

Should have quoted the original.

So I am out.

That’s odd because I can’t see any editing of the OP ? I might  need to refer to admin to investigate, was it definitely amended (presumably after you replied) Rodders?

Cheers, Martin

The drop down presets have settings for AGM but you have to scroll the window. Ditto lithium.

That's good news as I would much prefer the whole algorithm was one tailored for AGM technology.

So, clearly what the OP needs to adopt.

Ah, you're right, I posted the wrong picture. This is what's in the caravan.

Drop down for battery gives 12v/24v choice only.

Thanks, I wondered what that setting was for but it is disabled by default.  I was going to Google it tonight  but now I know.

Thats more like it :)

If you drop the menu (shown on your screenshot) for "Battery Preset" there will be a setting for AGM, select that and double checking the values it suggests. Make sure they are what Yuasa suggest

As JTQ has said by using a preset it will put in parameters for duration etc

(thats what I do for my battery)

I clicked battery preset. This drops down.

Then I clicked "Select preset"

No other AGM batteries listed.

I can't help any further as I use the Lithium preset which matches what my battery provider has said. I have no idea what a spiral cell is?

May be worth posting on the Victron forums as they are really helpful
