Renewal time and I've got 3 quotes so for that vary wildly.

Caravan is one year old Swift Challenger 645, stored at local caravan site storage facility.

Swift cover is £346 plus tracker activation at an extra £100

CMC is £490

Saga are £302 without tracker, new for old, same as the others.  I've seen some on here recommend Saga so I can't see any downside to insuring with them but interested in the opinions of folk more experienced than I am.  Only niggle is the Saga website is cranky and very slow.

Thanks

Try CaravanGuard who are based in Halifax so with luck you should be able to understand them. I have been with them for all three caravans we have had and they are never a moments trouble. Polite, courteous, helpful and above all NOT script jockeys.

Plus, if you have Tracker you get a discount.

we insure our cars via saga. Very impressed they have a 'no raise' guarantee for 3 years and no silly admin fee to change car or number plate etc. So far so good.

Interestingly Swift cover and CaravanGuard, share the same address and almost the same phone number!!! Different line into the same broker I assume

I won't touch Saga with a large bargepole, after a bad experience with them come renewal time.  Many many years ago now - but...   Beware their (then) well hidden auto renewal feature (along with many other similar insurers).

we have had saga , but like a lot of insurance companies the first quote is for new people and is an introductory offer  That is the reason we all shop around.

If mines an introductory offer, I'd hate to see the renewal offer

Saga have a good reputation and I see no reason why you should avoid them.

Rooder53, auto renewal is a standard  feature on all annual policies these days. The idea is that if for any reason you forget or are unable to renew you are still covered. You may or may not like the idea, but you will get it with all companies.

thanks for the replies folks. I was with Saga a few years ago for the car but they became very uncompetitive and moved on. Caravan quote certainly seems OK. I think I'll take the plunge.

Cheers

But dealing with insurance companies for renewal is, in a way, meaningless.

The true recommendation is how it is dealt with when you need to claim.

I read on here the experience of members with CMC and claiming. Very little hassle. It is not always down to price.

NOT TRUE.

It's often offered and I ALWAYS decline.  Pretty sure it's only "certain companies" that insist on it and I simply remove them from my 'possibles' when doing renewal quotes.

Saga hid it well or applied it without my consent way back when (perhaps almost 20 years ago?) ........   but reneged when I challenged them.  Quite a grovelling letter from a high-up in the end.

But it is why I will never use Saga for anything

NB I originally went on their "reputation" back then. Fool that I was.

I have had two different experiences with Saga. In 2014  I swore I would never use them again after their poor, pedantic handling of a write off that occurred while on holiday in Italy. (Thankfully Red Penant repatriated us)

All the  ‘extras’  like legal service and courtesy car I had paid for were......... UK accidents only.

Fast forward to this May and Compare the Market offered a very competitive figure through Saga.
Knowing them of old I decided to take a chance but read all the small print.

Last month I received a notification to say my car had been recorded on the highway and it wasn’t insured. I went ballistic and started a telephone tirade at the guy from Saga. He calmly and politely went through the details .....and discovered I had given the wrong registration in May. While reading THEIR small print I had entered my previous vehicles details. The guy calmly said he could sort that and I punched myself in the face while waiting  for the whacking big change in premium for this newer bigger version of the previous car.

”that will be an extra £16,” he said somewhat apologetically.

Like all insurance companies you have to keep your wits about you when it comes to renewals and changing insurers.

I promised myself to do better next time. Who knows it may be Saga again?

I really do not understand why anyone should be so against auto renewal. You get a renewal quote and can get alternative quotes if you are not happy. If you want to move the insurance you just let the old company know and cancel the bank authority. If you forget to renew or miss the renewal letter you are still covered. If for any reason you end up paying the renewal when you have moved the insurance you can still cancel this and get your money back. It is the failsafe option and is far better for most people.

I really do not understand how anyone could forget an insurance renewal date and ever need auto renewal!

Horses for courses / each to their own, though.

I always shop around even if I renew with the same.  If I move insurer I only need to accept the quote and pay the new insurer - no need to contact the old one at all.   (As per moving energy supplier, ISP, Bank,  etc.,. etc.,. where you deal with the acquiring company only.)  Even CMC membership and TV Licensing is not auto renew!  I'm in control.

Sadly, due to age or medical problems not everyone is able to remember all the dates needed these days, so if auto-renewal saves someone driving without insurance ,it is a benefit to all road users, bearing in mind it isn't done craftily and a reminder that the auto-renewal will do its job in X days, usually 14 or more, gives ample time to let it run or look elsewhere, I can't understand all the drama over something so inconsequential.

I always read the small print of what I'm signing up to and if auto-renewal is part of the deal and the deal suits me I sign up, then two clicks or so later the auto -renewal has gone, it's that simple.

The offer of auto-renewal and that's all it is, certainly wouldn't prevent me from considering a company or dismiss one from my search simply because of auto-renewal, I look for what's best for me and auto never enters my criteria.

Common sense isn't a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

There's a thing called reminders in computer Calendars and Phones' and even on-paper equivalents ....
