Cheddar Caves closing

Recommended Posts

Very sad indeed and a place we have visited often. There will doubtless now be a knock on effect the other attractions in Cheddar because of a reduced footfall overall.

Yes we’re at the Cheddar CMC site at October half term, it’ll be interesting to see how busy the area is/isn’t now.

It's quite likely that most commercialised caves will go the same way before the start of the 2021 season.

These sorts of caves exist as commercial enterprises because groups of strangers gather together in enclosed damp spaces and share handrails!

Article does say it will re-open sometime in the future.

It does but unfortunately it also says the current workforce will be made redundant. Sadly I suspect a few local businesses will lose out as they rely on feeding/watering visitors to the caves.

Not just these caves but the whole outdoor education industry that takes kids underground is in trouble.

Many of the instructors who lead these groups are freelancers and have no other income.  I am the engineer who does safety inspections for the outdoor industry at old mine sites and business is definitely not booming...
