Just had renewal.  In.          Gone up £100.     From last year.    Not used the caravan.      Think the charging extra for.    coronavirus furlough           So beware.

  • JanandJay changed the title to Insurance. Rip off

You don't say which company. My caravan cover with CMC went down. So did my vehicles, buildings and contents cover with Aviva.

CMC for the caravan stayed the same.

But both cars and home went up by 20% with Aviva.

Insurance companies will nearly always try and jack up the price for renewal in the hope you can't be bothered switching.

Look around, call current company if you want to give them the chance to price match.

I would bet you can find similar cover cheaper...

Multi-car cover was just  a bit cheaper at renewal as was the caravan.

I rang Aviva at buildings & contents renewal time to enquire about extra cover under the home contents and the guy on the phone offered to review my current cover. As a result, and without haggling, I got increased personal belongings cover, including accidental damage, outside the home (devices, watch, jewellery etc.) added and the revised premium came out less than the original renewal premium.

Some companies try to jack up the price at renewal. If you are not happy there are plenty of others you can go to. Look at it this way, if they cannot be fair with the premium will they be fair with a claim? You can make your own mind up and act accordingly.

So true Wildwood, I always get quotes every year for all our vehicles. Save a fortune.24days ish prior is optimum according to M Lewis.

Always, always, always shop around each year for any insurance. If you get a better quote go back to your original company and tell them to better the lower quote or you will move your business. That usually works. (Well it has for me for many years now)

Oh, and NEVER agree to auto-renewal, always insist on postal notification, that way you get plenty of warning of any hike in premium and time to shop around.

The club can easily afford to do that as they dont pay IPT, so they have a cometitive advantage.

As the renewal should reflect the current value of the caravan you should adjust the sum insured each year. On replacement as new it will need to be increased and if on replacement it should go down.

Insurance companies are required to provide 21 days notice by post of renewal premiums regardless of auto-renewal.

My renewal from CMC was same, but they neglected to tell me new for old cover expired 2 weeks after my renewal date as van is 5 years old. Wanted 50% increase for super cover to extend new for old to 15 years.

Gone with Saga who gave me new for old up to 15 years for half original CMC price, never mind increase for super cover!

Love SAGA for car ins-no charge to alter things eg when we had a private plate and 3 year gtee on premiums ie no raise. Wish they covered commercial vehicles ie our Navara but they don't but Admiral did give us a £25 covid refund which i felt was also very fair.

My CMHC policy renewal was 31p cheaper but I changed to super cover as the van is 5 years old and it cost me an extra 38%.

There have been some companies reducing premiums, but I think it is a minority. At the end of the day the companies may have a good year this time round, but could have a really bad one next, so they simply balance the good ones with the bad ones. The premiums are based on the average over several years, so this years savings will look quite small when an average is taken.

My buildings and contents insurance (just renewed) has gone up from £330 to £367 or about 11%, but I have just received my caravan renewal notice and this has gone down from £335 to £326.

Last year our new for old caravan insurance policy shot up from £220 to £330. Renewal just in and down to £255.

House insurance renewal is up around 12% on last year so will be shopping around. Whatever you say to an insurer such as lack of claims or living in a low crime area there always seems to be some underwriting reason why a premium has to go up. One thing I do know, in the vast majority of cases loyalty gets abused by most companies.
