Car Console Lights Contingence towing Bailey Unicorn Seville

Recommended Posts

I recently had my car lights checked because there was a rear left indicator fault. It turned out to be blown fuse, not my diagnostic skill. Following the repair, this week I purchased and collected my ordered Bailey Unicorn Seville. Checked brake and rear lights working OK and set off to my home destination. The journey was from Hinkley Leicestershire I was soon on the M69.  The first thing that I noticed my Mercedes E350 car central console never displayed normal functions. My whole journey console displayed lights error message such as rear left and then right registration lights failed.

has anyone here had a similar experience please?

Has the tow bar been fitted recently as it sounds like a towing module error - perhaps the wrong module has been chosen?

( many caravans now have LED lighting which requires compatible car electrics and some isn't)  Was the car and caravan electrics including charging circuit and fridge power checked by the dealer? This is another area where towing modules and harnesses sometimes are not matched properly. It could be a Mercedes service job.

I have an E350 as well, towing a Unicorn Valencia, no problems.  Does your car have a factory towbar or after market?  If after market, have the electrics been coded properly?  My car and caravan are both 2015 models.  I know when I bought my caravan Bailey were finding compatibility issues with various cars due to the caravans having LED lights and they changed back to conventional lights.  Not sure what the position is now.

It should be a simple enough job to test your car connections with a meter or test light, although this might not show up any load issues.  I'd be wary of going near a Mercedes dealer for an issue like this, unless you have a factory fitted towbar and electrics.  A towbar specialist might be better?

For the sake of other readers and the OP, the only LED road lighting on a Seville is the front and the amber lower rail marker sidelights, and the high level brake light - all of which come on with other lights. All other rear lights are bulbs. I speak as a Seville S4 owner.

I suspect three possibilities: either there is an wiring earth problem on the car (unlikely to be on the caravan) so that some lights are back-feeding through other lights to the car and confusing its brain;  the car socket is wrongly wired - the registration plate lighting on a caravan (and in my experience most cars) is from the nearside sidelight circuit - if the car is showing an offside fault then there could be crossed wiring; there is still another issue with the car that had caused the left indicator fuse to blow.

The OP should check all car light functions by getting someone else to press the pedals etc. If the car has stop-tail bulbs it is not unusual for the bulb internal earth to fail which will be immediately noticeable by differing brightness levels - it could also have happened on the caravan.

Perhaps the OP would keep us posted as to findings.

Knowing the age and exact model version (W212 / W213)  of the car would be useful to others, as well as factory fit tow bar or aftermarket.

Thank you all those helped me here. I took my Mercedes E350 to D & M Towing Sleaford Lincolnshire, a competent Technician checked the car. Disassembled the towing electrics and discovered loose wire connections. Made correction, car all lights checked out perfect. Took Bailey caravan on maiden voyage car lights all performing normal.
