CMC rebranding was it worth it

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just read the CMC annual accounts statement in the magazine. Membership down and the only reason annual fees ballance is up is because of the price rise. Overall the accounts  show little or no growth since the rebranding took place one wonders if the 6 figure cost of the exercise was worth it.

I understand why they rebranded but I don't think it was necessary as people knew that they accepted motorhomes. Perhaps they should be called the caravan and motorhome and tent club

Why would a long standing and well respected club want change its name without involving it's membership beforehand?  I can only think that they knew what the answer would be, but went on regardless.  That's how much they respect the members.

I’ve nothing against motorhomes but the name of the club to me will always be the Caravan Club.

A shameful waste of money, time and resources which could have been better applied to the then existing club.

I am always amazed at why ANY company/organisation feels the NEED to rebrand, as, to my simple mind its a total and utter waste of money. Look at Waitrose for example, it’s now Waitrose AND PARTNERS. Who cares? Everyone I know still refers to the stores as just Waitrose. The same as just about everyone STILL refers to the “Caravan Club”

Many years ago Dorset Police rebranded themselves. Probably something to do with the new ‘Head of Media” they took on. They thought it a good idea to change the Force logo, but only slightly.

So all of the vehicles had to be re-badged with the new logo, all of the existing headed paper had to be binned, and there was a LOT of it, think how many different forms  the police use. At least they didn’t change the uniform.

I then moved on to work for the County Council and guess what? Yep, THEY decided to go for a total “re-branding” DESPITE complaining of having no money. So once again ALL of the councils vehicles had to be re-sprayed in the new “corporate colours”  along with ALL of the headed paper, all of the hand out leaflets etc etc.

No-one was able to explain to me why it was done, and neither would they tell me the cost (I did ask under FOI) apparently it was “Commercially Sensitive Information”  so they didn’t/don’t have to reveal it to mere mortals.

Then there is DVLA, which is now DVSA, which includes the “old” VOSA, and don’t forget The Highways Agency.  Which is now Highways England. I wonder how much of OUR money was spent re-branding THAT little lot?

Oh silly me, I forgot didn’t I? it’s not THEIR money is it, it’s yours and my tax revenue so that’s OK then.

Grrrrrrr

You are losing sight of the fact that it’s a “Club” in name only. In reality it’s a multi million pound business that just calls itself a club.

The club  did need to apply more consideration to motor caravans, especially in site development, because it was not keeping up with what the motor caravan membership needed.   Re-branding was a badly conceived idea which had an unexpected negative impact. The top management of the club is entirely responsible for the whole stupid incident. I suspect the inner circle of the club surrounding the Chairman is pretty bullet proof. He claims the rebranding was in response to members feed back. I have not yet come across any member including CL owners  who agree with that.

ps Or even was asked for feed back on the subject.

pps. and they still aren't listening to the members.

The list of rebranded organisations/businesses is, I am sure, pretty extensive.

Was the cc rebranding worth it?.... Definitely NOT.  Waste of money and antagonised many members.  They are now paying the price for their stupidity IMO.

I spoke to a CL owner who had an inspector visit to check the site over, he found nothing whilst doing his checks, in fact he said how impressed they were running the site, until he started to drive off, then noticed they had not replaced the perfectly noticeable sign with the Walls ice cream logo, he was not happy with them, and made the comments on his report. And told them to change it before he left, the owners felt like dropping out the network saying the guy was a jobsworth. 🤔

Was it not all because the silly man at the top ripped the rear end off his caravan playing the complete fool making a TV programme, then purchased a motorhome, so changed the club's name?

Edit: possibly I got the "purchased" bit wrong.

But they did not have the facilities on sites for motorhomes hence majority of sites now have new motorhome points for filling tanks and dropping waste tanks .

VOSA, Vehicle & Operator Services Agency, became the DVSA, Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (not a rebranding but departmental reorganisation and accurate role naming), but the DVLA is still the Swansea based Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency.

All rebranding, no matter which company, does not do this in house.  None of them have any expertise in this area.

They are all approached by, or recommended to specialist outside consultants.

These consultants will have virtually no idea or understanding about the company, or what, why and how it operates.  They get the gist of it and then make recommendations on how rebranding, with new logos will make the business function better and improve profits.

The companies management, who have no idea about these things, and having spent a fortune on the consultants, go along with the recommendations and all the costs involved and give themselves a big bonus for being so clever.

If by chance the rebranding works, they all pat themselves on the back and give themselves another big bonus for being so wise and boosting profits.

If the rebranding fails, then they blame the consultants, as they had obviously been mis-informed and as they are not experts in this field, they are not to blame and because of all the stress they have had, award themselves a big bonus.

If you think  rebranding was a waste of money, look at the purchase and winding down of Alan Rogers!!

Definition of a consultant: someone who borrows your watch then tells you the time.

Someone who borrows your watch then “charges you” to tell you the time.

It’s been rumoured they are installing a clock in the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Apparently it’s no use having the inclination if you don’t have the time.

I am off to get my coat now as the nurses will be wondering where I am😁
