Garmin BC40 Rear View Camera

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Has anyone installed a Garmin BC40 Rear view camera on a caravan ?

I was looking to install one on our twin axle 8m van but the BC40 specs say it has a range of upto 8m !

Length from back of caravan to dashboard is about 12m so im not expecting it to work, but just wondered if Garmin were airing on the side of Caution.

I use an autovox camera at the moment but want something with better clarity that will pair with my 770-LMTD satnav so I only have one screen on the dashboard

many thanks

The camera is described badly.  It is clearly a reversing camera not a rear view camera.

Very many cheap and premium cameras are also described in this way.  Just try Googling rear view camera and you will find that 95% are not suitable for that purpose.

Specialists in motorhome cameras seem to give the best options but at a price.

Rear view cameras don’t have the guide lines and use a different focal length on the lens.  They should also be switchable to give a mirror view.

thanks John,

im not concerned about how its described. it will do the job I need it to do if the signal range is long enough.

The one I currently have, I have wired into the lighting circuit so its on all the time when the lights are on and provides adequate visibility directly behind the caravan when towing or reversing

As the BC30 and BC40 seem to be the only cameras Garmin do to link with the 770LMTD Im trying to find out if the signal will reach the 12m from rear of caravan to the dashboard.

I have a similar setup with my twin axle Bailey.  I have the camera neatly cables tied to the inside latch or the bathroom window (it’s not frosted - don’t get me started!) at the back.  I then ran a cable to the back of the fridge to get the 12v from the car power (worries I would forget to disconnect it if attached to the caravan battery).  It receives perfectly on the Garmin in the car.  I can’t remember the part numbers as I am camping currently off grid with the car parked in a different field.

Ended up getting the BC30

installed today and connected to side lights so I can access it on the move

picture is ok and the ability to adjust the guidance lines means the path of the caravan can be set up accurately.

I wont be able to give a good test for a couple of weeks but first impressions are good

If it's mated to a Garmin sat nav can it operate with voice command from the the sat nav ? Do you recommend the BC30 ? thanks malc

Sorry I know this thread is some 6 months old but I have purchased a BC40 camera to use with a Avtex Tourer Two sat nav which allows voice commands ("Show Camera"). The intention was is if it didn't work I would return it, however I have been really surprised and the range is nearer 18 metres then 8. This is when I have been trying the setup around the garden and house.

I just been down to the storage site and with the caravan measuring is 7.96m and the sat nav is at the front of our Touareg and all seems to work well.

I have also purchased the number plate holder/mount to go on the new caravan when it arrives.

The BC40 state’s up to 13m not 8m. However once you fix it to the back of the caravan and then ‘importantly’ mount it in your car it is rubbish! It can’t find the camera, and or loses the signal after a few seconds. Out of the vehicle it will actually cover more than 13m. Very disappointing! Unless you are towing with a convertible and with the roof down, don’t waste your money!
