Nearest Campsite to Santander

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello

We now have booked our ferry from Portsmouth to Santander in January (2020), where we will be arriving at 17.30 hours. I don't want to be travelling far in the dark in winter, so can anyone please suggest a decent campsite nearby?  We normally use C&CC en route sites but there is nothing very close or within an hour's drive. The next day we will be heading south to Salamanca.

Thanks

BH

Agreed, good site, but does not take dogs.

Thank you Jenny for the 'plug'. :)   During the winters I have stopped at Virgen many times.   On some of those visits I've noticed caravanners bring out their dog and walk it down the road.   Maybe it's a rule for the summer.   Maybe some people just try to get away with it.   The young woman who runs the site speaks excellent English.   Try a phone call or an email and ask her.

If that fails refer to Brittany Ferries Santander on line port guide which  gives the address of an overnight parking lot for caravans in Calle Cesar Llamarazes.

If there were a dozen or so other vans there overnight, I might join them but I don't think I'd sleep too well.   However, it is quite close to the dock area.

Thaks

I've just emailed Camping Virgen del Mar, I'll let you know what they say. I too took a look at the area on 'Street View' and it looks like roadside parking. Okay for  MH but I don't think I'd like to overnight in our caravan there.

This would have been great but I have just seen you have a dog. I'll leave it up though as it may help someone else.

We have stopped when coming into Bilbao at Camping Playa Arenillas. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Camping+Playa+Arenillas/@43.4037636,-3.3102064,199m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m16!1m7!3m6!1s0xd4e4e27664b89b9:0x6534acc41e95a645!2sBilbao,+Biscay,+Spain!3b1!8m2!3d43.2630126!4d-2.9349852!3m7!1s0xd4eecfb82c6c143:0xd0233910084f2398!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d43.4038076!4d-3.310487?hl=en

It's perfectly satisfactory as a night halt. It's a bit nearer Bilbao than Santander, but not massively so.

That one closes at the end of September

We always use a great site that is now recommended by the Caravan Club www.campingcabuerniga.com I have to say  this is one of our favourite sites. It is 3/4 hour south of Santander has good showers, wifi, great views and shops in the next village, fantastic dog walking.
