Big Trip vignette advice!

Recommended Posts

After months of planning we are heading off soon on our Big Trip through France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia and just wanted to confirm some road advice.

I know we require a vignette for Austria and Slovenia but do we require a vignette for Germany and Croatia?

On past experience, is it better to try and purchase the vignette before entering the country (as in, when leaving France close to the German order etc), or is it acceptable to stop at the first garage where, I think they can be purchased?

Cheers for any advice forthcoming!

No vignettes required for Germany or Croatia. Those for Austria and Slovenia can be bought at the border posts or at service stations on the approach to those  borders.

Roads in Germany are toll free for all except heavy commercial vehicles so there are no vignettes for the country.

Tolls in Croatia are paid either by cash or by credit card at the toll plaza. There are no vignettes for Croatia.

Good link for tolls/vignettes in Europe:-

If you are planning to use the French motorways is well worth getting an Emovis-tag for the tolls and never have to queue or get your front seat passenger to pay or operate the non-manned payment machines - there are now 'express lanes' where you can toodle through at 30kph.

I think that the cc and Eurotunnel offer a discounted joining fee.

Buy French autoroute tags direct from a concessionaire and avoid the charges incurred with third party suppliers.  ATMB and APRR often have special offers and have English language websites to apply for a tag. Payment is by direct debit on a UK card for any month in which the tag is used.

Avoid SANEF who will direct you to their UK operation with its extra costs.
