Hi, hoping someone can offer some advice please.

I have an old Compass Echo (mid 80s) caravan which has a textured finish.

Have just bought a second hand awning (FR Milano) and realised when we went to try it that it has suction cup attachment to the van which wont stick because of the textured finish.

Can any one offer any ideas please as to how I can connect the awning poles to the caravan? Are there any brackets I could buy or could I glue smooth metal "tiles" or something to the van?

Any help gratefully received!

Many thanks

Sharron

They used to sell nylon blocks which were fastened to the side panel with two self tappers. The blocks had a hole so that the awning pole could be hooked into them. Stainless steel self tappers are essential to avoid rapid corrosion, and non setting mastic is needed for the screw holes to prevent water ingress. I think you can still buy the nylon blocks, but if not it would be fairly easy to make some.

Many awnings have a beading just inside the one that goes into the awning channel. There are clamps available that lock onto this beading with location points for hooks on the ends of the poles.

Sew some ribbon loops onto the inner side of the beading where the poles will sit, so each pole with its and sucker "hang" from these. That is the way they use to be held; the loop needs to be just sufficiently deep that the sucker passes through. The sucker needs retaining as a load spreader, even though no longer a sucker as such.
