caravan purchase

Recommended Posts

We are currently trying to purchase a touring van having owned a van 5 years ago, having looked around for vans there seams two areas for purchase, first one is going to a dealer ,but you get an older van with a warranty but no extras(  awning etc),or buy private were you get a newer van with all the extras but no warranty, and the headache of wondering is it all above board,   any info trying to stay safe when buying private      , thanks in advance

Define "newer"

A lot of vans have 6 year warranties by the manufacturer.

If you are looking at 2013 or later vans then you still have some come back to the manufacturer for the major items like damp ingress or floor delamination. Minor issues such as cooker or fridge failure will probablybe oit of scope for many dealer warranties anyway.

Caveat is to carefully check when (and where) services have been performed, as manufacturers can be quite strict on service timescale. You may have to pay a transfer fee too £25 iirc.

A major factor is the Consumer Rights Act (CRA), which applies to dealers, not private sales.

Under the act you have a right to expect that the caravan will be (and I paraphrase substantially for simplicity!) fit for purpose when bought and if not abused or damaged will remain so for a reasonable time, bearing in mind price and age when purchased.

A dealer will often try to both make a selling point and limit this by offering a short warranty. This does NOT in any way limit your rights under the act.

Unfortunately the "reasonable" clause leaves the situation very vague as to how long your redress lasts on minor items where wear and tear is potentially a factor.

We all have our own priorities but we have always bought used from a dealer.

If you buy a newer caravan then it will as said possibly have some manufacturers warranty left if the services every year have been carried out . Buying private has no or very limited protection but a dealers warranty can be very limited as any repair eats into their profits .

Best I find is a caravan has been looked after and the owner has for some reason had to give up the hobby .

The best advice is buy a damp meter and don't be scared to use it or get a independent damp report before buying no matter how you buy it .

When buying privately the biggest worry would be the van being stolen or still under HP. You can do a CRiS check which should check these unless it is being sold quicker than they find out anything. https://www.CRiS.co.uk/CRiS-check/
