TomTom go live 1005 camper and caravan not cooperating

Recommended Posts

I have a TomTom Go 1005 Caravan and Camper which started to misbehave at the end of March when it couldn’t see any roads. It settled down when a new map was downloaded but only for a short time and now according to TomTom it’s now flubbered and needs to be binned as they say they no longer service this model or keep any parts (apparently it’s memory is no more). The TomTom forum is full of people who appear to blame a problem with the new map creating this issue.
Was wondering if anyone on here has had a similar problem.
Mine will switch on and show the start screen then move to the TomTom name and logo then go back to the start. This then continues for hours and hours and hours.
I’ve reset the device and downloaded the restore files to it but it refuses to cooperate.
Anyone had a similar experience or knows if the memory can be replaced in the unit.
Thanks.

Suggest you read the thread already running on this issue....will be helpful.

Sorry there is not any solution and the only solution offered is a 25% discount on a new model.  The 25% equates to the price on Amazon and the seller is TomTom!

This is a reply from TomTom regarding the same fault experienced by owners of the 1005 model;

I have checked with our second level team and they had made changes, Open MyDrive connect on the computer.  Now connect the device and even if MyDrive Connect shows no sign of connecting to the device please keep it connected.  The device will reboot at the end of the process, potentially several times. Test if the problem is resolved after the rebooting stops.  Should you have any further queries, please do get back to me and I will be more than happy to help you.
It has been running for an hour connected to my laptop and is still doing exactly the same with no improvement however I am going to leave it connected until 5pm!

My experience of the main competing brands (Tomtom and Garmin) is that Garmin general manage the lifecycle much better.  TT's tend to "drop off the twig" quickly, whereas the Garmin's go off more gradually, losing some of the add-on type facilities.  I use TT on the motorbike (much cheaper than Garmin) and used to use Garmin in the car (replaced by inbuilt) and on the boat.  All the TT's have required much effort to keep them going, the Garmin's get replaced for improved functionality before end of life... I'm on my 4th TT rider, 2nd Garmin car Satnav... Both since 2007

Thanks Shipbroker, I did do a search for possible threads but must have not used correct wording,

However good news, after 3 hours of grief I now have maps on the screen and it appears to be as it was (I live in hope).  The acid test will be tomorrow with a road test.

I am a member of Which Legal Services and have taken this up with them even though the unit was purchased under Sale of Goods Act in late 2014.  Last year I paid about £30 for the "Live Services" (traffic reports) and the software update was downloaded from TomTom direct so is covered under CRA 2015 even though it is free.  I think the reply from WLS would be interesting!

Another option is to report it to the BBC Watchdog as it would make interesting viewing as at the moment there are a number of people complaining about faulty Satnavs after the update and if the issue was aired it would bring a whole lot more people out of the woodwork!

Strangely our TomTom Classic which must be over 10 years old still works although there is an issue with the time and I cannot update it.

Update:-
Well the unit started, maps appeared, found satellites, and showed the car, the car followed in the correct place on the map, what’s not to like.  Everything went well until (there’s always an ‘until’) I thought why not try a route to home and then it was all downhill. It worked out the route but froze on that screen. Have tried to restore multiple times tonight but no joy. Now back to original fault
Dilemma - what to do, send to London for promised warranted repair for £40 plus postage ( to an old unit that will not update if TomTom has its way). Or bite the bullet and buy a Garmin 770.
Anybody got experience of the Garmin, I would appreciate any comments please.

Hi have been using Garmin sat navs for quite a number of years and am at the moment using  camper760 lmt-d had this one for approx. 3 years have had no problems at all get free updates and was originally recommended to Garmin by a person in Halfords who I had never met before who said most pilots used those so thought to myself if its used by pilots must be good so the rest is history .

I also have the TT 1005 Caravan, it too started to not read maps at the beginning of April when it said a download/update was required. Downloaded the update and yesterday went to use for the first time. Had the van on the back and for over an hour my OH tried to get the damn thing to work. Not a hope. It is exactly as Landyman describes it. Today tried it onto the laptop without any success.

It is just about to get thrown from a great height.

HELP !!

Same thing happened to my TT.  A fortnight ago, I used my TT to visit my mum in hospital at Wythenshawe and the TT worked fine, no problem whatsoever.  Next day, I went to visit her sister, who is in a care home in Burton-on-Trent.  Switched on my TT, and couldn't find a satellite.  It was like this virtually all the way (I was coming from Manchester).  Periodically, it worked, just about got me there before it gave up the ghost.  When I got home, I connected it to my computer to update it, thinking it was this as I hadn't updated it for a couple of years.  It came up that it didn't recognise my TT.  I've had it only 5 years.  In the end, there's nothing between TT and Garmin.  So bought another TT, which works perfectly (up to now).  When it was connected, a window opened with TT offering me so much percentage off a new one, although the ones this applied to were both in the region of £200+.  My TTs that I've always had I bought for less than £100.  I only use it to get me out of cities when visiting.  My passion really, is reading good old fashioned paper maps. Cost of updating?  Nothing:D

i think the problem has also had to do with the gps wrno on the 7th of april mainly devices with the global locate gps reciever, other use the sirfstar iii,  on my tomtom one xl with the GL  the time always reads 00:00 after it has got gps signal and again just recently it kept loosing gps signal on route, or it was off by  a few hundred yard and kept resetting by itself, i keep the maps updated every time they come out although not officially supported now, they might release an update for these devices in the future once they figured out to sort the issue as the internal clock still always reads the correct time, but for now i have now invested in a new one just waiting for it to arrive

The current issue is nothing to do with the GPS time issue.  Satnavs were working perfectly prior to the TomTom update.  It was the update that has caused the units to go faulty.

Remember the issue a few years ago when they found out Apple updates were actually designed to cause issue on their phones so that people would buy a new phone?  I am sure that this is what TomTom are trying however they are going to come unstuck big time as someone will demonstrate that it is their software that has caused so many units to fail!

As said we have taken legal advice and will update when we get an answer.  The answer should be interesting as SOGA and CRA 2015 are involved plus there are now two retailers, one being the original supplier and the other TomTom who sold the "Live Services" and map updates!

I have a Garmin Nuvi 9013 bought in 2011 and now my Grandson is using it and last week I had an email from Garmin that there is a new free map update ready to download. I am very pleased with my Garmin camper 760LM that I have had for 4 years now. Can't say how long a satnag should last ;) but a satnav should last for many years unless they say the free lifetime map updates are not available any more.

For the price you pay I would expect a minimum of 6 years!  As said our old 10+ year classic still functions!

The issue seems to be whether the failure is caused by an update, possibly intententionally (Durbanite has pointed out that this is not an unknown practice). If any gadget is fouled up by a software "update" the user has a case against the maker because the update is faulty (or deliberately destructive) from the start.

My Tom Tom Camper 1005 stopped working after the April update.

After a bit of searching I came across a company called SatNav Specialist Ltd of Halesworth Suffolk. Sent them an email, came back as "send in the unit" we will then quote and return the unit.

Posted Friday 10th May by special delivery had an email today 14th May repair costing £19.99 with a further £7.40 recorded delivery. Should be back on the 15th. Total cost £33.79

Interesting, my new Tomtom Rider bought a month ago has a footnote that says "lifetime means until XX/XX/2025"...so 6 years is lifetime.

Anyone happy to move away from the main brands, I use my old Samsung Galaxy S5 (other Android phones will do). I reset it to wipe all the data off. Added a 32GB SD card and installed the free Magic Earth app.

It does turn by turn navigation, works in offline mode so you download the maps for the countries you are visiting and can then run it in airplane mode so it won't cost a penny to run. You can download the maps via the app if you have wifi or a sim card in it so no need for a PC.

It does turn by turn navigation and allows you to import POI files such as those from Archies Camping, though that may require connecting to a PC.

It has the usual stuff too, warnings for safety (speed) cameras and if you go over the speed limit, both configurable to set how early / late you are warned, or if you are warned at all.

Try it in this country first to make sure you have it working properly just in case.

Total cost to me: 0

(Obviously I have paid for the phone over the course of the contract, but I would be doing that anyway).

Ongoing costs: 0

(Unless your SD Card dies and you need a new one).

Maybe a mount to fix it to your dash but if you use an old phone you already have, you will likely have one anyway..
