Q7 additional cooling ?

Recommended Posts

I’ve had an aftermarket tow bar fitted at a tow bar specialist.

Now the big question dose the Q7 req additional cooling to tow a caravan to the South of France ? Anyone with actual experience?

Ask an Audi dealer whether a Q7 with factory-fit towbar gets uprated cooling - if it doesn't, you're ok.

There is an issue with the Q7's sibling, VW Touareg, between factory-fit and aftermarket-fit but I've not heard of the same issue on Q7 or Porsche Cayenne.

Dealers lack the information and you need to speak to Audi technical department especially if the vehicle is under warranty .

Additional cooling is usually depending on the weight of trailer and road conditions .

This is a beast of a car that doesn't break a sweat when towing. Unlike many Japanese marques it's over-engineered in typical German fashion, for example the V6 gearbox was designed with the 500hp V12 in mind.

I know the Touareg (another beast) has a different spec with a factory fitted bar but even with the lower spec fan I doubt there has been any real life overheating problems. The only thing I worry about is the day the electrically deployed factory-fit towbar fails to deploy leaving me stranded, but that doesn't apply to you.

I disagree slightly with Commander Dave because dealers all have part number info at their fingertips, more likely they may be reticent to commit to an answer or actually look.

Fans (e.g. for my year) appear to be based on engine variant:

The Touareg has a single fan.  The parts diagram posted by limecc has twin fans in the Audi so clearly not the same.   The Touareg was supposed to have an upgraded fan if the tow pack was specified with the original order.   It turned out that on careful checking a lot of these cars didn’t have the fan upgrade.  I haven’t actually seen any reports of actual  problems.  That said I decided to have the proper fan fitted it cost me ~£1000, because we tow a 1900kg van.   I am not convinced that this was money well spent so I am not sure I would do it again.   All that said we find the Touareg a great tow car.  I’m sure the Q7 is as well

The dealers are not the ones you need to convince when you need a new engine and have a £15000 warranty claim .

We have had it before on here a manufacture will require a full report including laboratory oil testing from samples used .
