FreeGo Electric Bikes heading for liquidation.

Recommended Posts

It saddens me to say that the UK Importer & Supplier of these great ebikes has announced that they are going into liquidation due, in the main, to a new “anti-dumping” tax imposed by the EU on these Chinese imports.

FreeGo bikes are excellent quality, but if you’ve got one and are worried about spares etc. speak with your local cycle dealer who may be able to help. You may also want to join the FreeGo Owners Club on Facebook - a great bunch of members supporting each other and sharing experiences.

In August last year, when I ordered a replacement battery for the wife's E Bike supplied through AS Toys (NEC Show usual sellers) Pete the owner told me the EEC put a dump tax on far eastern bikes from immediate effect from 20% - 83. 6% and his factory got slapped 37. 3% so from Jan 2019 there are going to be some big increases.

I saw a notice on AS Bikes website about the tax and impending increases in price. Surprisingly, FreeGo personnel never mentioned anything - and they’re quite active on the Owners’ FB Group. They had some good offers on a couple of months ago, but some bikes were out of stock back then - maybe they knew what was on the cards.

I had an email yesterday (6th Feb) from the liquidators confirming this saying there  is going to be an online auction for the remaining stock.

Shame, as I have one of the Sport versions & it's a great bike. To me, they never seemed very proactive in pushing their brand?

I must be the only person in the owners’ Facebook Group who didn’t get this email about the auction! I feel quite left out, as I know my details are registered with the company. I tried to tell them they needed to get seen at the Camping & Leisure shows, but always felt they didn’t want to pay the money, preferring instead to use their existing customers to spread the word. I originally became aware of their bikes on a caravan site in Callander and made a note of the name. When I was ready to purchase I did my own online research and, coupled with a few shop visits to see the various models, opted for the folder - a decision I don’t regret, as I rate it highly. Such a shame things have ended this way, but be interested to see if another company buys up the brand (& customer database).

Oh the irony! Not long before the end of sales of purely petrol/diesel cars was announced, the EU was threatening again to fine the UK for not doing enough to tackle inner city pollution. So now they have put out of business an organisation actively contributing to such a reduction. .. incredible, and so EU.
