Breakdown Cover

Just thought I'd share this experience.

We’ve been members of the C&CC for a few years – and when looking for European cover this year, we realised that our breakdown cover wasn’t up to scratch – so compared Mayday and Arrival. I was amazed how much more expensive the C&CCs Arrival package was for us.

We currently have cover with Autoaid (£42 for platinum  UK cover - included the caravan but not quite the same as the specialist policies available from the 'Clubs').  Arrival was £225. 39 to equal my current UK breakdown cover, whereas Mayday was £134 for the same cover.

Granted, I could add annual European cover to Arrival for £76. 80 – but as working parents with kids in school, touring around the continent isn’t really on the cards (might be great for those who can). Most of our holidays are in the UK, so it works out much cheaper for us to take the more expensive Red Pennant cover for the month that we’ll be away in Europe (@ £84). Total premium for Mayday + Red Pennant =  £218, with Arrival coming in at £302. 19 including annual European cover.

So, we are trying the C&MHC this year to benefit from Mayday premium.

Just thought id ask but what length is your adria? 7. 4m? As i have done some research and alot do not cover over 7m. We have arrival with rac thru ccc and is £120 per year. they do any length touring caravan, but only uk. when it goes to euro cover is back to 7m again. and no avail for monthly dd. it has to be a 1 off payment. so called red pennant and they quote £245 for 24 days euro cover.

Hi smino0_1,

Yes ours is about 7. 4 in length.

Out of interest - what cover do you have under Arrival for £120?  When I look base price is £104. 99, add anything beyond single roadside and recovery - it's over that. e. g. joint is about £134, add at home and it's £146 etc. Mayday Premium UK + Personal was much better as a result.

I'm finding the figures odd.   My quote for RP was a lot less than £245 (for breakdown only - we already have travel insurance)?

Try Britannia - £93 for the cover you're looking at. They cover caravans up to 8 metres and on the odd occasions I've used them the service has been excellent.

The packages from the club's will offer double rows so you can be towed on to your holiday destination and then returned home at the end of your holiday or the caravan to site and car to garage then recovered if not repaired and some will only cover the caravan while attached which could be the car recovered home and caravan left on site and some will not cover the caravan for breakdown itself which the club packages offer and as said there are size limits so check all the small print .

We have cover through Nationwide, which is the Britannia cover, and it looks sufficient for our trips abroad.

Can you confirm that if the issue is with the caravan i. e. puncture, they will still attend?

Valid question. .........some time back the local Mayday/Britannia/Bulldog recovery agent was telling me that certain of their businesses would not allow them to attend if a real wheel; wasn't available. .....I have had a spare changed by Mayday without problem,,the others I don't know about. RAC I know refused a friend with a 'squirt' but that was some time back,so things may have changed.

RAC were fine with us in pre-caravan days until a couple of years ago when they lost my wife's car. It died in a supermarket carpark in our home town. When the engineer eventually arrived, very late, he couldn't sort it on the spot,  so we arranged their local agent's recovery truck would call here to collect keys, then take it for repair work at their locally approved garage. They collected it OK, but a few days later, when asked how things were progressing, denied all knowledge of the car, and effectively accused us of losing it ourselves. It was only because we had the recovery truck driver's phone no. that we were able to track it down. Their locally approved garage was pretty dreadful too. We got our own place to check the work out later, and left the RAC as a result.
Britannia, through LV=  has so far proved cheaper and efficient on the one time called out.

AAhh might be a misleading as im talking about caravan and not car. Im cover separtley for car. the cover i have is for caravan breakdown. If car breaks down then they will tow car and caravan, but if caravan breaks down car cover wont tow caravan. so this is for caravan breakdown.

what is your avante ? over 7m (not sure if its total or just body).as if green flag they only do <7m but if done thru camc they do any size.

Same for you geoff are you with Mayday. if so thats why they do any size. If not with camc. then you would also have the cost of joining camc to get it over 7m thru mayday.

Yes it does, if you read the policy wording (my emphasis):

"any mechanically propelled vehicle, registered in the UK, that requires insurance for use on the public highway
as specified under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and does not exceed any of the following dimensions when fully
loaded:
- Caravans and trailers - 8 metres in length (including A-frame).
- Motorhomes - 8 metres in length or 7. 5 tonnes in weight.
-All other vehicles - 7 metres in length, 2. 3 metres in width, 3 metres in height or 3. 5 tonnes in weight.
All vehicles must also meet the criteria specified in Section B - Vehicles.
