No of course they are not, and who on earth would expect the EV manufacturers to even consider making an offering to caravaners.   A minority market (and thats being generous) of people with grossly overrated expectations that their minority needs would be accommodated.

Spot on . .. I can see the advantages of EV's and have recent experience of Tesla X and BMW i3, they are both fantastic cars in terms of their technology. but they are a "country mile" away from being cost effective means of transport.  

In my opinion ALL Ev's so far purchased have been made by people who have the financial resources to be able to indulge their personal interest in EV's. I am very gald that some people have been able to do this because it all helps the progress towards more affordable EV's in the future, but in the here and now there is no possible financial justification to buy a new EV.

just an example of what is out there, it’s not only cars driving the technology - storage, charge and discharge matters in a myriad of installations

The technology is probably he least of the problems, one of the ones in sight will probably be viable. Infrastructure and costs are much bigger issues.

Many vehicles are used for towing trailers of all types, of which caravans are just a small proportion - that's a big market to ignore.

Once EV's are mass produced - and that will come - the costs will greatly reduce to a point where Joe public can afford them. If they can make a lorry, then they can make an suv that could tow a caravan.  

Infrastructure will take time & money, but do you think the fuel companies will want to miss out on those profits?

Tesla have made ONE lorry - they can't get Model 3 production up to promised levels - Tesla may get the headlines but don't expect them to actually deliver in volume.

Even GM, which has more experience of mass production than anyone, is having to restrict market availability of Chevrolet Bolt (Opel Ampera-E) as they can't get production levels up.

I'm not expecting GM to do anything any time soon. They have been struggling ever since I can remember first paying attention to any news. Tesla are a small brand making high end specialist cars, they are never going to be a mass producer. Other brands can & will make electric cars in volume. Might not happen for a few years yet, but it will.

Having experience and doing it properly are two different things - GM are incredibly inefficient.

When Elon Musk first introduced Tesla his business plan was to create the technology, prove its value and scale-ability then sell the tech to those able to do it on an industrial scale, this seems to have moved to becoming a producer (or perhaps the 3 as to be successful to evidence the ability to scale, I don’t know) which is where he is struggling without an industrial partner.

That VW for one is doing its own tech over the coming decade with ‘e’ being at each price point in the range should be worth watching

That's what I've been trying to get across all the way through this thread. VW & a couple of the Japanese car makers - some of who make such a diversity of product that technology will overlap - are investing millions in R & D for electric cars. Those & probably  not the Americans will lead the way. It will take time, but as I've said before, we have a pretty good starting point now.

I can see why in time the electric vehicle will be a fraction of the price of a diesel once the out lay for the development has been pay off as the reduction in components of thousands of parts in the engine and transmission .

That is a possibility if they can come up with a viable battery technology that does not rely on exotic materials.
