2004 was a changeover year for the Astra so it may be last of the earlier model or first of the later model - two 1. 6 engines were fitted, a 1. 6 8v with only 75PS and a 1. 6 16v with 100PS

You don't say how many berths you need but the smaller 2-berths from around 2000 should do the job - the Bailey Ranger 380/2, 450/2 and 460/2 were 1020-1100 kg MTPLM - the Bailey Pageant Majestic was 1170kg.

Elddis, Swift and Lunar would all have had similar size/weight caravans.

Have you checked the plate on the car or just taken the information from websites as the towing allowance varies on different models and years ?

Having towed various caravans with both the hatchback and estate versions of the Astra 1. 6 petrol, I can confirm that they are very capable cars in that respect, so once the towing limit for your exact model has been established I suggest spending a day or two looking at what is on offer at your nearest dealerships and talk to the salesmen regarding the weight specs of their offerings.

Do not blindly accept comments like, "your car will tow this caravan easily", but do your own research.

As you say you are new to caravanning then It may be worth taking time to browse the towing information we hold on our website together with many caravan specifications so hopefully that will assist. Unfotunately we do not hold any price-related listings as prices are constantly changing. Sites such as Towsafe, UKTow. com and Towcar. info can prove useful.

Above all though, buy yourself a damp meter (protimeter) and if you find a caravan you like, with permission from the owner, check it for any dampness inside, particularly where there are joints in the body panels, and around any apertures. Walk away from anything with over 20% readings and be cautions with readings in the upper teens.

Gordon.

This is just to get an idea of what may be available within your MTPLM of 1200kg. On Caravan Trader you can restrict your search to a maximum MTPLM. I'm not suggesting that you but a 'van this way, but it could give you an idea of what you can get within your limit.

Check the web sites for the tow bar makers, Witter, Westfalia, Brink and Bosal and google *local tow bar fitters". You can then enter the cars details on their web sites or ring them for more information.

Hi Disney

We had a Jag and getting an after sales towbar fitted isn't a problem and nor will your towing now! Have fun out and just enjoy the van
