What About Mail When On A Long Trip?

Wondering how we can deal with mail while we are away on a long trip - up to two months. Our neighbours used to empty our outside mailbox for us and keep it all till we got back but they can't do that now because of illness.

How do others deal with mail while away?

If at first you don't succeed. ... redefine success.

The post office will retain your mail until you return home, but for a sizeable fee under their Keepsafe service - details and prices on line.

Or just have the post office redirect all mail to a different address (£41. 85 fee for 3 months)

To all the insomniacs, look on the bright side there are only three sleeps until Christmas

We used the RM Keepsafe service for 5 x 6week trips in 2012-2014. EVERY SINGLE ONE. ..ended up with mail through the door!

Sometimes they forgot to switch it on for a few days after the arranged date. ....other times they switched it off before the return date.

Whist it greatly reduced the pile we had to force back with the front door, it was annoying they couldn't get the dates synced. On each occasion we complained. On each occasion they refunded all the Keepsafe charge. So I think it's a great service to get 80% of your mail held for free! ;)

We now know the postie. ..great bloke. He puts our mail in the neighbours door for the duration and the neighbour bungs it in a plastic bin till we return.

First job is to eliminate as much junk and paper mail as possible by telling the sender to stop sending it. Free papers, screwfix cats, Go Outdoors cats etc etc. Change as many domestic business accounts to paper free, on line accounts. Use the mail preference agency to stop all unaddressed mail. Finally, the small amount of wanted and essential mail can be re-addressed by RM for a smallish fee to a UK address i. e. a relative or close friend, who can open it for you and send it forward if you want it - perhaps scan it and e mail it to you, or post it to you. The other way is to use RM but they charge rather a high fee for overseas.

We made up half a dozen stamped and addressed Jiffy bags (we were staying in one place) and our neighbour put the "sensible" looking letters in them and as they filled they popped them in the post. We got them a few days later then chucked most of it away!

I won't buy the Mail in this country, let alone when away on hols.

I've got nothing to do on this hot afternoon

but to settle down and write you a line.
