Bmw 525d Saloon Anyone Tow With One?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys does anyone tow with a BMW 525d e60 saloon auto?

We have a fleetwood heritage 640es 2004 max weight 1400kg

Braked towing capacity on BMW is 2000kg.

I've got an x5 2003 diesel ATM but it's starting to get unreliable etc. I've been offered a BMW 5 series saloon for a swap with my x5

Any thoughts?

Driven them but never towed with one; expect you will find it quite a bit softer on the rear compared to your X5, so will make towball weight far more critical. You certainly won't find it short on power and you could consider strengthening the rear end up with a set of MAD springs.

Main problem with early models is the swirl flaps. If one goes so does the engine, as the flap falls into the cylinder. Easiest way of doing it is to fit blanking plates.

I had the 530d Touring. Lovely car to tow with, power when you needed it. ..

Well the 525D has been a 3. 0 6 cylinder, 2. 5 6 Cylinder and a 2. 0 4 cylinder.

The E60 2005 has a 2. 5 6 cylinder with 174bhp and 295lbft. Although many 2. 0 4 cylinders would beat that today the 6 cylinder unit is silky smooth and makes a lovely sound when pushed.

The E60 is a stable tow and the 6 speed auto is smooth and reliable although not as crisp or efficient as the later 8 speed box.

I certainly wouldn't have any doubts about towing 1400kg.
