Which "smart" Charger?

Recommended Posts

I have an old Halfords 4A charger but I want to get a smart leisure battery charger to help revive and maintain my 2 year old battery that's had a couple of discharges recently but hasn't given up the ghost. Some specific makes and models have been mentioned on CT in the past but I'm struggling to find the posts.

The chargers I've looked at online range from moderately to very expensive. I don't want all the whistles and bells just a good quality one. What would you recommend?

Ctek MXS 5. 0 should cover most eventualities in the 'van and at home.

We have it's predecessor, the MX5, and it's served us well for the past 5 years.

We bought this one: https://www. tayna. co. uk/CTEK-MXS-5. 0-Charger-and-Conditioner-MULTI-XS-5. 0-P8690. html

Snap.

We tried the ones from Aldi/Lidl, but both ours, and my mate's, did not last very long.

We could have been unlucky, but once bitten etc.

And along with one of the plugs below can charge/condition my car battery via the 13 pin plug whilst the car is fully locked without the cable entering via the bonnet.

Plus one, excellent option, though if funds are restricted the occasional offering from Aldi and Lidl are if nothing else very good value for money. They unlike the CTEK have to be watched as if there is a power cut then they don't automatically reset, therefore are not the best option to leave on for months unattended, should your application benefit from doing that.[eg a setup with an alarm drain.]

Edit: well, plus three by the time I typed this.

Aldi one for me, the only difference being that mine doesn't restart if the power trips but for £13 I can live with that.

They are in the Aldi at the minute.

We have a numax one which is spot on. Not the cheapest, but in all the years caravanning this has meant I haven't had to change my battery at all

Another vote for the CTEK MXS 5. 0. Not the cheapest but certainly among the best.

I have had a Lidl charger for some time now and it has been excellent. I have an old Citroen which is only used for leisure purposes - car rallies and the like and I regularly use the Lidl charger to keep the battery fit for use. It has given no problems at all. As far as I can see, the only advantage of the CTEK over the Lidl is that it will reset itself after a unusual event of a power cut. The advantage of the Lidl is that it costs about 25% of the cost of a CTEK.

Good as these modern 'smart' chargers are, they cannot rescue a totally flat battery but for maintaining a intermittently used battery they are excellent and can be left connected permanently for this purpose.

Did you claim on the Three year warranty?

I have had a Streetwize multi stage charger (Master charger?) for a number of years now and works well. Was about £25 from memory and they also do a trickle charger with great reviews for £13. 49 on Amazon

no need to spend a fortune IMO

Guess what ?

Out of warranty. May have been a bad batch, but the CTEK has been faultless for over five years.

The ctec needs to last at least 12 years then to represent the same value.

Saves going back to Aldi/Lidl every few years. My time is precious. :D

Griff,

As some else said. Aldi have their charger in stock at the moment for £13. 99 go to be worth a punt.
