Heppy,

Towsure is not too far for you to go in Sheffield, a mere 14 mile jaunt and well worth a visit now that they have extended, also CCC on Bramhall Lane is worth a look, South Yorkshire Caravans, Bawtry are also well in your reach in half an hour, we live near Worksop and we bought our last awning from Glossop Caravans way over the other side of the pennines, but what the heck if there is a bargain it's worth the trip.

Thanks for replies, i think i will have a look around before going to next months show. As caravan is in storage and cannot measure does any one know the size of porch awning i would need for my 1987 2 berth Avondale mayfly .

Cheers. ...

Heppy,

The size of the porch awning is really dependant on the size of the van as it is with a full awning but you do have to take size into account a little. A porch awning is designed to fit somewhere along the awning channel where it will allow access through the main door. What can be a problem is the distance from your door to the nearest window. Every porch awning will be specified with a width and depth, if your entrance door is say 6 feet from your window and you buy a porch that is 7 feet wide then when you erect the porch you could find that the wall of the porch falls slap bang in the middle of the window. If you can get to your van in storage I would recommend you do and take some measurements before you go and look.

I speak from experience as with my first van I bought a porch awning without measuring and ended up with a porch wall in the middle of my window.

There is always the chance that another member has the same van as you an can give you the sizes you need.

I have a brand new 2004 Bradcot green Portico porch awning I am considering selling. It has never been used and is still the boxes and has the alloy poles with the easy fit system. I think it sells for about £300 however make me a reasonable offer and I will consider it. Obviously the guarantee will still be valid for several months. I am not a dealer and I could not be bothered with the hassle of ebay and live in the Worcestershire area. :)

More importantly, you also need to take into account the height of the awning rail from the ground as not all caravans are the same. A boat shaped roof will have a lower rail than a flat roof. Porch awnings come in different heights to fit both.

No problem as I am not advertising it at present Email me off list at imk@pobox. com and I will give you a suggested price and you can compare that with whatever a dealer offers you. I am in no hurry to sell as I have another porch awning anyway. This one is surplus and you are under no obligation whatsoever. :)

It's amazing how many gazebos you see these days, they really do "extend" the awning area, and as you say, they can be quite cheap.

We found even the local supermarkets are selling them really cheap as well i don't

know the true quality of them, but they didn't look to bad. :)

As with most things, you get what you pay for ! They vary from very basic cheap-and-cheerful to really very smary and sophisticated - the ones with the "concertina" style top rail are particularly quick and easy to set up, like unfurling a huge umbrella.

There's a good argument in favour of buying the cheapest one you can find as a trial, but bearing in mind that it will be slower and more awkward to assemble than one of the expensive ones. The cheap ones do have the advantage that they pack up into a remarkably small space.

If it works for you, then buy a good quality one that will last many seasons.

The ones with sides are very handy but they tend to be more expensive.

It is important to secure the thing down with the pegs (provided) and guy ropes (often not provided) as they do have a tendency to take off, even in quite light winds !

How about this?

Not sure if the van door would open though if it were flush with the van

Very like the one we have, except that ours has green and white stripes. On our van, the door does open OK.
