Caravan Cover - Solar Panel

Recommended Posts

Has any cover manufacturer start to insert a clear section over a solar panel?

Even a clear panel will severely reduce the power output of a solar panel

I have to disagree there. We have a protec cover with a clear panel for the solar panel. Our van is never hooked up and it stood from the beginning of October until Feb with no hook up and the battery showed 14 amps.

I doubt it showed 14amps - it might have shown 14 volts but that does not equate to the amount of power in watts that the panel is generating, nor the current that's being input into the battery. A 100watt panel will never ever produce 14amps.

I took it as 14 volts and thought it sounded about right

I don't think manufacturers are sufficiently reactive or innovative. A clear problem is the various positions and size of the panels. But there is no reason why manufacturers should not offer a bespoke service. They probably do, but, if so, it's not well marketed.

Probably was 14 volts, anyway there was enough charge for everything to work including the motor mover which is the main thing!

Kathy657,

From your comments it would appear that ProTech can provide a cover with a clear panel. Do you supply them with it's position as they ask you to do with any other "lumps" on the roof?

Doesn't Kathy's 'van, Cadiz 3, have the solar panel factory fitted? The cover company would be well aware of the location and fit clear panels to all covers for this model of caravan.

I took our cover to a local awning repair company for them to fit a clear panel for the solar panel. It cost less than £20. Mark the position for the panel first and ensure that the plastic used does not filter UV.

Cover has gone back on today for the winter.

In addition to Pro-Tec Specialised Covers also provide a clear flexible perspex insert for their winter covers as an optical extra. Will also cut and velcro extra panels for say, access to battery boxes.

I have had one withe the perspex insert for two years now on a Coachman with a 80watt solar roof panel. In the year the vans first appeared with panels representatives visited The Lawns in the first instance to measure the position on the various Coachmen vans. I did not have to tell them. The hole is reasonable generous in size: not a 'glove fit'.

Forget the price but think it was in the region os an extra £20.
