Place To Visit En-Route To London

Recommended Posts

I am booking a mid week stay at Abbey Wood CC site and want somewhere interesting to stay en-route from the Sheffield Area and it breaks up the journey, possibly 2 nights stay. I would like something maybe around Oxford, nice easy walks, coffee shops, meals out etc. . Something that will impress the Wife.

Any recommendations, can be anywhere in the general direction between Sheffield & SE London.

Thanks

David

When you get to Abbey Wood, watch out for foxes - we had one get in the awning one night and it was last seen with one of the wife's sandals in its mouth running across the grass as dawn broke . . . . . . . . .

Bladon Chains, with a visit to Blenheim, and Churchill's grave at Woodstock. It is possible to walk to both.

You can also get a boat trip on the river through the centre of Oxford. We only live 30 miles from Oxford and sent my folks on it earlier in the year, which they absolutely loved

Hows about Cambridge.

As well as visiting historic Cambridge, the IWM Duxford is not too far away.

A stop over just north of London at Hertford http://www. campingandcaravanningclub. co. uk/campsites/uk/hertfordshire/hertford/hertford is handy for trains into London and not far from http://www. royalgunpowdermills. com/

at Waltham Abbey and the 2012 Olympic white water centre http://www. visitleevalley. org. uk/go/whitewater/ for those of you that like water sports.

A nice restaurant a short drive from the site is http://www. thewhistlingduck. co. uk/ will impress the wife.

Then it's just a flop around the M25 to Falcon wood to your south London site. Allow a couple of hours to get there!!!

Personally I would do it in one go.

I have regularly done the journey in 5 hours from a little further north than you.

However if you head for Oxford, you are the wrong side of London and will require a decent trip round the M25.

You could always stop at the CC site nr Welling Garden City - Can't remember the name.

Thanks, my stop could be along the eastern side, rather than Oxford if there are any suggestions.

What's worse is that the next day when we were going up to London, we discovered that two other pairs had had one of the straps chewed off - why on earth they couldn't have done that to both in a pair and left the others - the end result was 3 pairs ruined and if it wasn't for the pair of trainers in the van, my wife would have been going around St Paul's in her slippers !!
