  1. I would like to put my van on a site for the winter but be able to visit it for long weekends, and maybe for a week at a time. Can anyone suggest any sites within say 100 Miles of Warrington that would offer such a thing? I've been quoted £200 a month all in, which seems about right. Site needs to be dog friendly, adults only.
  2. Hi there This is our first year on a site which is open through till mid January and so we are reconsidering our options for Winter drain down. Previously when closing in October we paid for drain down by the site. We are now thinking that we might want to enjoy the site over the winter, but are concerned about frost. We had a leaflet about the Flue Induratec and watched the video and it seemed a really good option to allow us to drain down each time we visit, but we have a few questions for anyone that is in a similar situation. Firstly can anyone recommend this drainage
  3. I am planning to hopefully travel to South-Eastern Spain (Cartagena) next January/February for a few months. My ferry options are Portsmouth-Bilbao or Dover-Calais. Over the past 4 years I have driven to Spain through France in the spring when the roads are good and campsites are open mainly going through central France to Perpignan or down via Bayonne. Given the time of year, I do not know the best way to travel down or where to stop en-route. Do I take the long ferry to Spain or hop over to France? Where can I stop? I am asking now as Brittany Ferries will open up their
  4. Does anyone know if its viable to keep very low heating on run by a solar panel to keep the damp off while not using the caravan over winter. I have a great solid fuel stove while I'm in the caravan but I plan to go away for several months this winter and wondered if there was any heating that would stop everything in my caravan getting very damp. Thanks
  5. Evening guys, Ok. .......bought our caravan (new ) in July, used it until end of Oct. We have it in Storage for winter. As manuals says (or this is how I have read it) we have turned the master switch off (under the bed). We have a solar panel fitted but just done a check on swift command and its saying the voltage is at 4. 5. Is that the battery ***** and were we supposed to leave the master switch on for the solar panel to effectively trickle charge over the winter. The battery is an AGM 110 if this makes any difference? Sorry for the daft questions
  6. We have booked two rallies in Spain during January to March next year and wondered if anyone who has done the same had any tips. We are experienced ralliers, all year round, and have done a lot of foreign touring but not in the winter. Ian
  7. With the dropping temps I was wondering what sort of (minimum) temp should you consider sticking a jacket on the aquaroll/watermaster? I have one ready but presume the temp needs to get pretty low to significantly freeze a full container to any degree (I tend to fill ours in the evening after dinner so it's full & ready for the morning). It seems to me that the water in the pump / pipe is likely to go first in which case it might be just as easy to bring the pump in/into the awning of a nighttime. Advice appreciated. .. (We're away to Malvern this weekend)
  8. Wow! I've just booked 14 nights for £60! Fully serviced, hardstanding. Indoor swimming pool etc. I wonder if we'll be the only nutcase there??
  9. I would like to lift my caravan onto axle stands for the winter layup, but have a problem in that the position it has to be left outside the house means that I cannot get the car into a hitch up position I use the mover to put the caravan into its store position. I know that the book says you cannot jack up the 'van safely without it being hitched up to the car as it could move. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, and is there a way I can safely use the jack to place the axle stands? Any thoughts gratefully received. Brian
  10. This is my first winter with a caravan and have put mine away into storage for a while. Have been reading this article this morning and was wondering what you guys do? http://www. emm-bee. co. uk/news_details. php?id=118 Do you put it in storage or not? Is this different with caravans and motorhomes? Thanks Ben
  11. Hi, Friends in Aberfeldy have informed us they have had snow flurries--- winter has arrived ( up there ) david
  12. This year I splashed out and got myself a nice shiney Merc E class estate to tug my caravan. Love it. I read the manual from cover to cover. .....well almost. But I did discover that the tyres fitted to my car are Goodyear Efficientgrip make. I have been told that these are not recommended for use in temperatures below 4C. As our winters get a good deal below that for a few months, should I consider changing them to winter tyres for the Winter or is this precaution uneccessary?
  13. The operating instructions for my Dometic absorption fridge states that winter vents should be fitted during the colder months but none came with my ‘van so I queried Dometic whether not fitting these would actually affect my warranty. The answer from Dometic was “No”, it would not affect my warranty for the first claim, however, they would charge for any subsequent claim. They also said that cold weather was very unlikely to cause the fridge to fail but (rather counter-intuitively) may reduce cooling performance. To quote them directly: “If you use the product below 10-8 de
  14. Hi folks. I was given a static caravan by a local dealer to live in on site while I do a self build. I spoke to someone else who had done this, and they recommended putting boards around the sides. I have done this now, as well as stapling bubbling wrap to the underside to try and keep heat in, and cold out over the winter. However, the past two days have been horrendously windy and wet, and wondered if the boards improve things, or are they likely to cause damage to sides of the van when they get buffeted by the wind? Any advice will be gratefully received. Thanks.
  15. Hi there, Just bought a new Bailey Pegasus GT65 Verona and after taking it down to Penzance the past two (fabulous!) weeks, we're now beginning to plan for a trip to Southern Spain in order to get away from the cold/wet/dark UK winter. We're towing with a 2010 SEAT Exeo ST 143 Estate and plan on visiting family near Poitiers France before heading toward Barcelona and then on down south. Would welcome any suggestions/advice that any members with experience in this area can offer. A few immediate questions. .. Chunnel or ferry? Can't find any ferry schedules (Plymouth/Portsmouth to St M

  17. Today I purchased a drain unblocker gun from Aldi, cost £7:00. It works by pumping up a chamber then releasing this pressure in one go. Tried it on my sinks and basins which were not blocked but the flow is now much improved. It occurred to me, though I have put my van to bed for the winter, that in future it would be ideal to use to push the last bit of water out of the hot and cold system. Cheaper than the commercial idea and has a dual use. Win win.
  18. Anyone have any suggestions for sites/places to go in late Autumn/Early winter for a weekend break? We're fairly new to caravaning and have been using our van in summer but would possibly like to use it more before we get snow and really bad weather.
  19. We are off to France in October with the intention of driving down into Spain. Our insurance covers us until February and wondered if anyone has any information on sites in France and/or Spain that are open all year. Also, any tips, advice or experience of an extended winter trip to these countries would be appreciated.
  20. Hello I'm currently in pompei with my partner and we're going to be spending october in scicily. We want to go to tunisia then through algeria (very breifly) to morocco for november. Has anyone does this ? Or is anyone doing this this year? as we're a bit nervous of what its going to be like. I've heard about free camp's and read a few stories and it seems like a good idea for winter. Thanks
  21. I am planning a winter holiday to Austria with a Lunar Clubman. Temperatures can get as low as -16 to -20C so external water tank is not use. I can manage with bottle drinking water but I would like to be able to supply the water heater with water. I am told that the water onboard tank is external, under the Van, so I expect that will not be of any help. Anyone with some help or ideas?

    Winter Caravan Care

Some tips for those who are planning to take their caravan out during the winter: - Remember to keep the battery charged and move the electric hook-up cable away to stop it freezing. - Drain the water system after each trip and remove the water filter as any damp caught in it can turn into frost that can cause serious damage. However, if you do choose to leave water in the system over the winter, make sure you protect the water pipes with lagging. Use propane gas for the cooker rather than butane – which freezes below four degrees Celsius. - Make sure any moving parts are well
  23. Has anyone got a prefference on snow chains or socks ? I know people use one or the other but what i want is peoples opinions that have tried both and can give a good comparison. Id like to be prepared because i will still be touring over the winter in the uk and i know how quick the weather can change, My innitial idea is to have chains on the front of the car ( mondeo 03 ) and socks on the caravan ( eagle 08 1500kg ) which in therory give the car the extra grip and help the caravan in braking / stability ! Thanks, Dan
  24. Greetings All, I have prepared an advice page for new caravanners on 'My Caravan Site' please have a look at: http://www. mycaravan. org. uk/Winter%20Caravanning. html Any comments observation additions welcome. Regards Dave
